Staff Report
Conestoga coach Brody Bush saw only the positives in Friday’s PNC Lacrosse Invitational (by Corrigan Sports) at the Ridley Athletic Complex at Loyola University Maryland.
Bush’s Pioneers were defeated by MIAA power Calvert Hall, 12-6, but he said his team handled itself well in the spotlight of a much-anticipated tournament played at a vaunted college venue with a large crowd.
Jack Kinnear had four goals and an assist and JT Bugliosi added three goals while Omari DeBerry had two goals and an assist as the Cardinals improved to 7-1.
For Conestoga (1-2), Tommy Sopko had two goals and Tate Kienzle had a goal and an assist.
“The score is no indication of how we played,” said Bush. “These boys played their hearts out and never gave up. Their goalie was on fire.”
Conestoga outshot the Cardinals (ranked No. 5 in the C2C North America Rankings), 42-29, but goalie Joe McSorley was brilliant with 10 saves and the Pioneers (1-2) could not recover from a 7-3 halftime deficit.
“We out-groundballed them (25-24) and had 42 shots to their 29 and we won half the face-offs.” said Bush. “We just had a hard time scoring against McSorley.
Scott MacMillan had seven saves for Conestoga.
“They were able to get a lot of shots on net,” said Bush. “We missed the goal too often. But the kids played with such grit.
“I like the challenge of really good games in the beginning of the year. They prepare us. I told the boys we might be the best 1-2 team around.”
