Avon Grove scored five unanswered goals to break open a 2-2 game and claimed a 9-5 win over host Bishop Shanahan today, moving the Red Devils into undisputed possession of foirst place in the Ches-Mont League.
The Devils – the No. 4 team in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings – improved to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the league. The No. 7 Eagles are 11-1 and 6-1 in the league.
The win also snapped Bishop Shanahan’s 29-game league win streak.
Avon Grove took control of the game after Doug Jones put the Devils up, 3-2, with 8:30 to play in he first half. Beau Kush (two goals) made it 4-2 and Zach Augustine added another.
Avbon Grove tallied two more goals late int he half, by Brendan Harman and Augustine.
A key for the Devils in the first half was the face-off work of Nat Hammond, who went 9 for 9.
Bishop Shanahan did make a comeback attempt as Alex Wagner, Sam Goforth and Ryan Smith (two goals) all scored to make it 7-5. But Kush scored early in the final period and defenseman Brayden Peck closed the scoring.
