Yale welcomes six freshmen to the roster for 2015-2016, the team’s first season with Erica LaGrow as the Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women’s Lacrosse.
The Class of 2019 represents five different states and consists of midfielder Amanda Bosland (Basking Ridge, N.J.), goalkeeper Allie Carrigan (Lansdale, Pa.), midfielder Izzy Nixon (Greenwich, Conn.), defender Eliot Schulte (Hopewell, N.J.), attacker Julia Sullivan (Manhasset, N.Y.) and attacker/midfielder Addie Zinsner (Alexandria, Va.).
The newcomers bring impressive credentials to New Haven. They have all served in leadership roles while in high school — four were lacrosse team captains, and two served as captains of other sports (Bosland in soccer and Carrigan in field hockey). They have earned multiple honors for their performance on the field, including three who have been named All-American (Nixon, Schulte and Zinsner). Their work in the classroom has been recognized in many ways, including five who have been named Academic All-Americans (Bosland, Carrigan, Schulte, Sullivan and Zinsner). They have been a part of successful teams, including four who were part of championships at either the conference, county or state levels (Bosland, Nixon, Schulte and Sullivan).
They new Bulldogs have found multiple ways to contribute to their communities, including volunteering for organizations and groups such as Soccer Buddies for special needs children (Bosland), Tree House Books promoting literacy (Carrigan), Breast Cancer Research Foundation (Sullivan) and McKenna Hypothermia Center (Zinsner). They have made service trips to places such as Jamaica (Nixon, for Lax Volunteer Corps/Fields of Growth) and New Orleans (Sullivan, for Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts), and have worked with children in roles including assistant CCD teacher with St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Zinsner).
Their talents also extend beyond the playing field; one had artwork displayed at the Long Island Children’s Museum and C.W. Post and has played piano at Carnegie Hall (Sullivan). Another was published in a peer-reviewed medical journal while she was a research assistant at Stamford Hospital’s Center for Integrative Medicine (Nixon).
The newcomers join a roster that also has plenty of returning veterans looking to make an impact in the first season under LaGrow, who was a part of five straight NCAA Tournament appearances as an assistant coach at Florida. Yale returns 26 players from last year’s team, including six players who made at least nine starts. Four starters return from the defense, which ranked 18th in the nation (8.67 goals allowed per game).
