Match MVP Selena Lasota had three goals and two assists and Canada used a 3-0 spurt in the second half to seize a lead it would not relinquish as it shocked the world by defeating Team USA, 9-8, today for its first FIL Women’s U19 championship at Edinburgh, Scotland.Image may be NSFW.

Canada took an 8-6 lead after USA had scored the first two goals of the second half. Canada goalie Kameron Halsall (Caledon, Ont., Orangeville Northmen) made many key saves.
Brenna Shanahan (Mississauga, Ont., Mimico U19, Canisius College ’19) tied it at 6-6 and then Danita Stroup (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Port Coquitlam Saints, LIU Brooklyn ’18)) hit Holly Lloyd (Glen Ridge, N.J., Buildin Black Lacrosse, Loyola ’20) with a no-look behind the back pass for a 7-6 lead before Lydia Sutton (The Blake School, Minneapolis, Minn., Minnesota Elite, USC ’18) made it 8-6 with her second goal.
Lasota, who along with Sutton made the All-World team, made it 9-7 after USA had drawn within a goal by Miranda Ibello (Maryvale Prep, MD).
USA again drew within a goal, 9-8, on a tally by Kerrigan Miller (Bayport-Blue Point, NY) and Francesca Whitehurst (Roland Park, MD) had a free position with under 15 seconds to play, but failed to tie it.
USA’s Lindsey Ronbeck (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Olivia Ferrucci (Barron Collier, FL) scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 6-5 lead, but then Canada took over.
After Lasota found Lloyd for a 1-0 lead, USA scored three straight as Ferrucci, Ronbeck and Ortega converted, but Lasota dished to Holly Lloyd to make it 3-1. USA took a 4-1 lead as Chloe Jones (Lawrenceville School, N.J.) scored, but Sutton tallied her first and Lasota made it 4-3 and then fed Lloyd for the game-tying tally before putting Canada ahead, 5-4, before the half.
Just before the half, Kameron Halsall made a key save on Nikki Ortega (Middle Country, N.Y.) to keep it 5-4.
The US had won the last four championships. Canada had never reached the finals until this year. Australia had been the runner-up the past four times after winning the inaugural title.
