Former NCAA and MLL standout goalie Greg Cattrano has been coming to Philadelphia and the Shipley School for 16 years to run his Co-Ed Goalie Clinics.
Why does the Long Island native enjoy coming so far to teach young goalies?

“I’m actually living in Michigan now but it’s always been a great group of goalies here and we do it twice a year,” said Cattrano, who played for the MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage in 2004 and also was the 2002 MLL MVP in leading the Baltimore Bayhawks to the title.
“The goalies keep showing up and they seem to be learning a lot. I follow some of the goalies when they leave and a lot have had success so it’s worked out pretty well so far.”
Cattrano – assisted by Shipley’s coaches – had a diverse group of 20 goalies, ranking from youth to high school and both boys and girls. No matter their experience level, he preaches “controlled aggressiveness” and working on the mental aspect of playing goalie.Image may be NSFW.

“It’s about being able to handle being scored on and controlled aggressiveness,” he said. “You have got to be under control and be aggressive. Go attack the ball, don’t just step into the ball.
“You have to watch the ball at all times. The ball looks bigger when you watch it. We also are making sure goalies have the right psyche; it’s OK to get scored on, it’s what you do next.”
Cattrano was a three-time MLL Goalie of the Year & MLL All-Star starting goalie. He also was a 1999 Member of the USA World Cup Team and an NCAA All-American in 1996 and 1997 at Brown. he plans to do another clinic at Shipley in late February.Image may be NSFW.

Shipley head coach Mark Duncan said bringing in Cattrano to run the clinic is a plus for Philly goalies.
“It’s always great to have a legend of lacrosse back to teach the basics to the goalies in or area,” he said. “After 15 years we still get a great turnout and even the coaches learn something.”
