Archbishop Carroll’s senior goalie Maddie Ferraioli gets a good workout each day at practice.

While Samantha Swart, Anna Murphy and Kaitlyn Detwiler are sharpening their attack skills, Ferraioli often is the victim. At the 17th Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High Saturday afternoon, Ferraioli faced a major challenge with the potent Garnet Valley attack. She also had the chance to watch as Swart, Murphy and Detwiler combined for 12 goals as Carroll (11-0) remained undefeated with an 18-12 victory over Garnet Valley.

“You see what they are doing and how the other goalie has to struggle with them and you feel a little better,” Ferraioli.

By halftime Saturday, Murphy had scored her three goals, Swart got two goals and three assists, and Dewiler had chipped in with two goals and one assist as the Patriots erased an easy 2-0 deficit to take a 10-6 lead.

“We try to stay strong defensively because we know the other things will take care of themselves,” said Detwiler, a junior who has committed to Loyola. “We’re always fired up to play teams like this.”

Carroll, which has won 16 straight Catholic League championships and figures to be a major contender in the PIAA Class AAA tournament, owns victories over District 1 AAA schools Harriton, Downingtown West and Garnet Valley as well as Radnor, a Class AA team. The Patriots scored 70 goals against those four opponents.

Syracuse-bound Swart led the way for the Pats with five goals and five assists, while Detwiler contributed four goals and one assist and Murphy scored three goals. Junior Sydney D’Orsogna added a couple of goals, junior Shea Neary made some solid plays in the midfield, and sophomore Keri Daly was strong on defense and contributed several interceptions.

Riley Delany and Camryn Faith got three goals apiece for Garnet Valley (10-4).

“You get to know what you have to do and anticipate making the plays,” Daly said. “We’ve still got to play some more tough teams (Conestoga and Springfield-Delco) before it will be time for the playoffs.

“I think we’ll be ready when it’s time for those games.”
