Sam McGee collected three goals, two assists, four groundballs and two draw controls to help lead host Abington to a 14-1 win Wednesday over Quakertown, giving the Ghosts the undisputed Suburban One American Conference championship.
Abington (13-4 overall) closed a 9-0 league season for its first perfect conference mark since 2009 and first title since 2010.
Lindsay Baer, Sam Simon and Casey McCallister each added two goals for Abington, which closes its season Friday against Central League foe Radnor at home.
Second-year Abington coach Amanda Kammes said her team has improved partly due to a tougher non-league schedule that included Inter-Ac League leader Episcopal Academy, South Jersey power Moorestown, Suburban One National champion Central Bucks West and 2016 state qualifier Bishop Shanahan.
“Honestly we played an improved schedule from a year ago and we are stocked with talent with six of my 11 seniors going on to play lax in college,” Kammes said. “What made it happen? Belief in themselves and that we belong in the same conversation as (teams like) Conestoga and Garnet Valley.”
Kammes is excited to see her team compete in the District 1 Class AAA tournament.
“It (the tough schedule) will pay dividends down the stretch,” she said “Last year we went into districts largely untested with only Radnor and Garnet as out of conference foes. This year we are a bit more seasoned and the kids have a better understanding of how they stack up against some top opponents not only in Philly but in NJ and nationally.
“Certainly nothing is guaranteed in playoff time, but I feel good about where we are and all we have accomplished as an Abington lax family.”
