Leah Hunter scored on an 8-meter in the final 30 seconds of play to give visiting Downingtown East a stunning 6-5 win over top-seeded Central Bucks West Thursday night in a second-round District 1 girls’ playoff game.

The Cougars (13-6), seeded No. 17, advance to play at ninth-seeded Garnet Valley Saturday in the quarterfinals at noon.

Emily Wurzel scored two goals for the Cougars while Hannah Wurzel, Livi Lawton and Maggie Flynn each scored once. Emily Robinson was a standout in goal with 10 saves. Coach Christa Somits credited the Downingtown East defense.

CB West (17-2), the Suburban One National Conference champion, had beaten Downingtoen East, 6-1, just 12 days earlier.

“Playoff games are about showing up and having perseverance and fighting for every ball,” CB West coach Tara Schmucker said. “I have to give it to Downingtown East – they outran us to loose balls and got most draw controls and rebounds.

“Defensively, West should be proud. We held them to few goals and did a good job of executing our game plan. We simply could not convert with a 29 percent shooting percentage, and the chemistry we are known for did (not) show up tonight.”

Bryn Boylan scored a pair of goals for the Bucks while Casey Reichwein, Dani Dundas (one assist) and Finley Ueland had one each. Dundas also had an assist.

“We had a poor ending, but there are many reasons they should be proud,” Schmucker said. “They had an outstanding regular season.”
