Long Island’s three-year reign atop the top flight of the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament will come to an end as Philadelphia 1 and Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 advanced to the championship game of the Onondaga Division after each went 3-0 in pool play in action on Saturday at Yale University.
More than 1,200 of the nation’s top high school players, representing 27 states, are competing in the historic event that dates to 1933.
Philadelphia opened play with a 14-9 win over Connecticut, then edged defending champion Long Island Metro 1 by a 12-10 score, and capped off a perfect day with a 12-7 win over D.C. Metro 1. Philadelphia will meet Massachusetts/Rhode Island in the title game after the New England squad knocked off New Jersey North 1 (14-6), Long Island Metro 2 (14-10) and Baltimore Metro (15-7).
Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 and Philadelphia 1 battle in the championship game of the Onondaga Division begins at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert Award will be presented to the outstanding player in the tournament. The award has been presented since 1994, and former U.S. World Cup players Lauren Aumiller and Katie Chrest are among the past recipients.
Five other division titles will be on the line on Sunday with Philadelphia 5 playing Utah/Idaho in the Cayuga Division, Wisconsin playing North Florida in the Haudenosaunee Division, Orange County (Calif.) playing New Hampshire/Utah 2 in the Iroquois Division, Illinois playing Washington in the Oneida Division, and South Florida playing San Diego in the Tuscarora Bracket.
