Philly Team 1 reached the championship game at the Women’s National Tournament

Team Philly reached the finals with a standout day on Saturday when it toppled powers Long Island and Washington DC and went undefeated.

Philadelphia jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the championship game, but neither team could pull away in a game that was tied seven times, the last coming after Philadelphia scored three straight goals to knot the game 11-11 with 12:38 to play. Massachusetts/Rhode Island answered with a three-goal run of its own and ran out the clock for a 15-13 victory.

Madison Ahern led Massachusetts/Rhode Island with three goals and Emma Farnham and Jane Hansen each scored twice. Philly was led by Katie Detwiler (Archbishop Carroll) with four goals and Olivia Doody (Germantown Academy) scored three times.

Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert was presented to Detwiler as the outstanding player in the event. Detwiler, a junior at Archbishop Carroll High School (Pa.) is committed to play at Loyola (Md.).

“It was really exciting; I knew this was the first Philly team to make it to the finals in a while,” said Detwiler. “We worked so well together and everyone played their hearts out.

“They (Massachusetts/RI) moved the ball so well. They always bounced back every time we made a run. But it was so much fun to work with all our teammates. No one was selfish and everyone wanted to move the ball; the offense did so well for being together for the first time.”
