Naturally, Sam Swart knew she’d have the best offensive day of her career when she made a superb defensive play.

AC’s Sam Swart
Swart has bounced back and forth between attack and midfield this year, but the Syracuse-bound Archbishop Carroll star is definitely known more for her offensive flair. When she knocked down an Owen J. Roberts pass early in the teams’ PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal Saturday at West Chester East, she knew it’d be a good day.
There’s no way she could have predicted that she’d score a career-best nine goals, but that’s just what the Catholic League MVP did as the Patriots rolled over the Wildcats, 15-5, to set up a semifinal date with Garnet Valley on Tuesday at Henderson at 2 p.m.
“It started when I knocked down a pass, and I just knew right then and there that it was a team energizer,” Swart said. “Once I had that knockdown, I felt like it was going to keep going. It wasn’t about the goals, it was about the play in between the goals.
“Maddey Ferraioli’s saves brought out the best out of me, too. When she saves, we all get hyped. Scoring goals is hype, but when Maddey saves the ball and it’s not going in, that’s a good feeling.”
There’s not much time left in Ferraioli’s lacrosse career, but she hopes it ends in style. She’ll head to the University of South Carolina next year as a normal student and her twin sister, Abbie, a soccer player at Carroll, will head to archrival Clemson. It’ll be the first time that the twins are separated, but the two-hour drive is manageable, especially on football Saturdays.
Before she gets to Columbia, though, she’s got a state title on her mind. If she and the Patriots can play like they did against the Wildcats, there’s a good chance that they’ll be back at West Chester East next Saturday.

“I want to make the most out of it, and that’s what I’m starting with (Saturday),” said Ferraioli, who denied nine shots sent her way. “That’s what I’m going to do for the next game and hopefully, for the championship game. I’m just going to do whatever I can to make the team win.”
Sydney D’Orsogna scored three goals for Carroll, while Katie Detwiler added two and Grace Gallagher had a goal and an assist. On the other side, Kelsey Killgallon netted a pair of goals for OJR and Anna Dempsey, Eloise Gebert and Sydney Drumheller also scored. Mia Tornetta capped her career with four saves.
