Archbishop Carroll used a late 3-0 run to erase a 7-6 deficit and clutch goaltending by Maddey Ferraioli (10 saves) to defeat Springfield-Delco, 9-8, today and claim the PIAA girls’ Class AAA championship at West Chester East.
The PIAA title was the first for Carroll (24-1), Phillylacrosse.com’s No. 1 team.
Springfield-Delco had used a 5-1 run to seize the 7-6 lead, but Carroll’s Sydney D’Orsogna tied it and All-American Sam Swart (three goals) put the Patriots ahead, 8-7, with 9:43 to play off a Madison Henry assist. Swart scored again from Henry with 5:10 to play to make it 9-7.
Springfield (20-5) pulled within 9-8 just over a minute later on a tally by Bridget Whitaker, but Carroll gained possession and ran out all but 45 seconds of the clock. The Cougars gained possession, but Ferraioli made a great save off a Julie Schickling free position shot seconds later.
The Cougars had lost in each of their first two trips to the PIAA title game, to Radnor, 14-7, in 2010 and to Garnet Valley, 13-9, in 2014.
