St. Joseph’s Prep has announced the hiring of Radnor native Tyler Gilbert – who attended The Haverford School before transferring to Virginia’s Episcopal High – as the school’s new Head Lacrosse Coach. Gilbert comes to the Prep after serving as head coach at Saint Louis University High School in Missouri where he advanced to the state finals and semifinals in his two seasons at the helm.

As a player, Gilbert is the only person in NCAA history to win a Division III (Washington College, 1998) and Division I (Virginia, 1999) National Championships in back-to-back years. At Washington College, he was named co-rookie of the year and scored two goals in the championship game. At UVA, he was part of two ACC championships and a Final Four appearance in addition to the National Championship.
“We underwent a deliberate national search for our lacrosse coaching position because we wanted to make sure we found a person completely committed to the student athletes in our lacrosse program and who understands the mission and value of our Jesuit institution,” said Athletic Director Dennis Hart. “Tyler’s background at a high level of lacrosse and having spent
the past two years at a Jesuit school gives me the confidence that he is the right person for the Prep.”
Gilbert has over a decade of coaching experience, including heading the programs at Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks and SLUH. He has also worked as a professor of Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia University in Irvine, Calif. In addition, Gilbert is the founder and director of Prolific Lacrosse, a premiere program featuring top youth and high school players in both Los Angeles and St. Louis.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be named the next head lacrosse coach at St. Joe’s Prep,” said Gilbert. “Throughout the interview process, I became increasingly encouraged that it was the
perfect fit so I’m glad the athletic department and administration felt the same way in the final analysis. I’m excited to return to the city where I grew up and learned to play lacrosse and
humbled to have a chance to do what I love at an esteemed Jesuit institution like the Prep.”
Gilbert starred at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, where he was a three sport athlete and garnered All-American honors his senior year in lacrosse.
Gilbert holds a M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia, and a B.A. in Sociology from Virginia.
