Joe Saulino can recall the pain of hearing 7 years ago that popular West Chester community lacrosse coach Drew Bauer had died in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland.
“I was in Annapolis at a lacrosse camp when it happened and I think I was pretty close to where it happened,” said Saulino, who was named the “Bauer Blue Collar” award winner in leading Henderson to an 18-7 win Tuesday night over host West Chester East in the 7th annual “Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game.”
“I came home and it was quite a tragedy for the whole lacrosse community,” Saulino said “I was so sorry for the loss because I know how much of an impact he and his family have on the community.”
Drew Bauer played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.
Drew began coaching youth lacrosse when he was a sophomore at West Chester East High School and continued coaching after attending college at St. Joseph’s University. He coached several years for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Penn Stars youth team and had been coaching in the West Chester Lacrosse Association since 1998.
Saulino – committed to Salisbury University – had two goals and three assists to spark the Henderson (4-3, 3-1) attack in the Ches-Mont League game. Archer Rymiszewski led the team with five goals and two assists and Jeff Benson had four goals and an assist, Pat Keegan had three goals and three assists while Jack Saulino had two goals and four assists.
“It is quite an honor, being a kid who grew up in West Chester and its community program,” said Saulino of the Bauer award.
Saulino said both teams look forward to the City Championship and that once again the big crowd helped emotions reach a peak. Henderson raced to a 10-3 halftime lead in this game, and never was threatened.
“Definitely, any time you are playing your cross town rival, whether its East or Rustin emotions are flying,” he said. “Their emotions were flying and so were ours, but having Luke Wierman at the face-off X, controlling things there is great. He did a great job.”
Saulino said the Warriors, who reached the District 1 and PIAA Class AA finals last year while finishing second in the Ches-Mont, have rebounded well from an 0-3 start.
“We started by playing two of the best teams in the state in Avon Grove and Strath Haven (as well as undefeated Central Bucks West) and that put us in a confusion we weren’t used to,” said Saulino. “We’re figuring out what to do and we’ve got some games under our belt.
“We got it going mentally and we’re clicking and it really did show tonight. The crowd was really good; every year it’s crazy how intense it can get. The crowd played a role in the emotions throughout the game and it had a good effect.”
