In a classic battle between the neighboring rivals, Pennridge defeated host Central Bucks West, 8-7, in two overtimes Thursday night on a goal by junior Logan Lazasz.
The Rams improved to 5-1 with a win in their Suburban One National Conference opener at War Memorial Field, dropping CB West to 5-1 (0-1 conference).
“In my two years here, we’ve lost two one-goal games and a two-goal game,” said coach JP Banks, who coached with West coach Matt Coverdale. “I don’t think Pennridge has beaten CB West since 2012.
“They are good, they are really good, and I think we’re a pretty good team. We came out and we played tough. I have tons of respect for Matt (Coverdale), his staff and all the work they do with those kids. I have nothing but good things to say about how hard his kids play, how fundamentally sound they are, how they do the right things and how they fight and never give up.’
The Rams – who got stellar goalie play by the coach’s nephew, Tristan Banks (19 saves) – won it when Lazasz came up with a loose ball in the midfield.
“Logan Lazasz picked the ball up and was ready before anybody, kind of won the whistle and sprinted down the right sideline, went underneath and just jammed it home,” Banks said. “This is one of the best CB West teams I’ve seen, and I’ve been watching them for a long time. They have some real, real good players. It was a battle.’
The Rams, who led 2-0 after one quarter, took a 4-2 lead into halftime and still led by two (5-3) heading into the final quarter when the Bucks scored four goals to just two for the Rams, knotting the score 7-7 at the end of regulation.
“They did a real good job possessing the ball,” Banks said of the Bucks. “We probably played two-thirds of the game on defense at least.
“They got a lot of shots, but our defense did a really good job of forcing shots from difficult angles, and Tristin (Banks) was making a lot of saves.”
Banks excelled after sitting out Monday’s game against Unionville with the flu.
“He came out and really stood on his head,” Banks said, going on to acknowledge his defense. “Brandan Howell, Andy Kelly, Johnnie Banks, Dan Hart, and all our middies played great defense, but our D middies, Tyler Sessa, PJ Matkowski and Shane Hartzell – they just did a real nice job.”
Lazasz and Nick Fanelli both finished the game with three goals and two assists, and Kevin Britner added a pair. Ryan Garner had two assists.
For the Bucks. Erik Ojert scored a pair while Joey Rockovich, John McCreary, Zach Lorino, Jake Ojert and Garrett Hitchens each had one goal. Rockovich and Michael Samson both chipped in an assist.
West’s Garrett Hitchens won 12-of-19 face-offs. Zach Hess and Colin Horton each scooped up six ground balls.
West goalie Max Dunar was credited with 11 saves.
