Paige Tyson had four goals and Lauren Foley posted 15 saves as visiting Perkiomen Valley stunned fifth-seeded Harriton, 9-8, Thursday at Lower Merion in the second round of the District 1 Class AAA girls’ lacrosse tournament.
No. 12 seed Perk Valley (14-5) advances to face No. 4 Central Bucks West – a 10-6 winner over No. 20 Methacton – on Saturday at a time to be determined.
Anna Dawson added two goals for the Vikings while Kat Kelley had a goal and three assists. Kate Hickey and Caitlin Leap each scored once.
“With only 4 returning starters from last year we are extremely excited about how our season is going,” Tyson said. “This win means a lot to us because it shows that all of our work this season is paying off. It also is huge for our program because it’s the furthest we’ve ever made it into districts.”
Katelin Williams had five goals for Harriton (12-5) while Molly McDonough had two goals and an assist. Devin McLain made nine saves in goal. The Rams led, 5-4 at halftime.
“Our plan was just to go out there and play our game,” said Tyson. “We didn’t know much about Harriton other than they would be a tough team but we’d be able to keep up with them if we just play together.
“The reason we were able to execute this so well was because everybody stayed composed throughout the whole game. Harriton is a very fast and high-pressure team, but by staying calm we were able to play our game and not let them get in our heads.”
A win Saturday would clinch Perk Valley its first trip to the PIAA playoffs while a loss would drop them into playbacks.
This is huge for us going into the next round,” Tyson said. “We knew we weren’t favored going into the Harriton game, and it will be the same going forward, but this game proved that we can compete with higher ranked teams.”
