Keith Broome, whose Springfield-Delco team has been a perennial District 1 and state contender for his 22 years at the helm, has been named the 2018 Pennsylvania Area Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (PASLA) Coach of the Year.

Broome has a sparkling 409-93-6 record in his tenure and has led the Cougars to four Central League championships, seven District 1 championships and three trips to the PIAA finals.
This year’s Cougars went 20-5 and reached the District 1 Class AAA finals as well as the PIAA semifinals. But Broome has gained praise for much more than producing winning teams.
“The players may not have been the best players in PA, but they were the most successful together which is a testament to Keith’s coaching,” said longtime Springfield-Delco assistant Kathleen Geiger. “He studies film, checks the stats of every team on our schedule and plans practice accordingly.
“He is a great coach and an even better person who commands the best from his players. He has a very simple motto … ‘Be the Best’ and the girls recently tattooed it on their arm!”
Added assistant coach Jackie Eastman (Grenier):
“I played for Mr. Broome from 2004-2007 at Springfield. During those years we won two Central League championships and three District 1 titles. Our success as a team when I was a player and the tradition of success that follows Springfield Lacrosse is telling of Mr. Broome has a coach.
“His love for the sport and for coaching shines through every day at practice and this motivates his players to always ‘Be the best.’ He has an unwavering commitment to teaching the sport the right way, putting emphasis on good sportsmanship, a positive attitude and fairness. Now that I am lucky to be coaching with him on the sideline, these are qualities that I try to emulate every day.”
Springfield-Delco senior Dana Carlson said Broome is a great motivator.
“Having Mr. Broome as a coach the past four years, was great,” she said. “He was always there for us and is a positive influence on me.
“He’s always making sure we all have the confidence and that we believe in ourselves to truly ‘Be the best.’ Coming from the middle school to high school was a big transition but thankfully Mr. Broome welcomed all of us to the team and extended our game of lacrosse.”
Maggie O’Connell, who just finished her freshman year at La Salle after a standout career at Springfield-Delco, said her success is a direct reflection on Broome.
“I first off want to say I personally want to thank you for everything you have done for Springfield lacrosse and myself,” she said. “The program has achieved an enormous amount of success and it could not be done without your help and all the time you have put in these past years. You didn’t just teach us about the sport of lacrosse but also teamwork, leadership and accountability.
“Thank you for always pushing me to the best of my ability on and off the field. Thank you for constantly believing in me every single day at practice and every game. Your encouragement and support meant so much to me then and even more to me now.”
