David Sowers, who led Upper Dublin to two PIAA playoff berths in his three seasons, has stepped down as head coach.
Sowers had a 50-14 record and his teams won two Suburban One American championships (2016, 2018) and a District 1 title (2016).
Sowers gave several reasons for his decision. For one, he wants to be able to watch his older sons, Michael (rising junior All-American at Princeton) and Nick (just graduated from Upper Dublin, committed to Washington College) play college lacrosse. Also, he said the grind of being a head coach has taken its toll.
Sowers – who was also head coach at Hatboro-Horsham for 9 years and the head girls’ coach at Upper Moreland in the late 1990s – said he would strongly consider coming back to Upper Dublin or another school as an assistant.
“I have been coaching since 1989 and I still love it, but times have changed with administration and dealing with parents,” said Sowers, who also was an assistant at Upper Dublin for three years (2012-2015) and for one year at Wissahickon (2011) before taking the head coaching post. “For me it’s never been about the title, it’s been about what’s best for the kids.
“So for me going back to an assistant’s role would allow me to have more time seeing my boys, Nicky and Michael, in college. I feel like a new coach will have the time to put into the program, and that’s only fair.”
Sowers, who teaches at Hatboro-Horsham, also has been the Upper Dublin football team’s offensive coordinator since 2012. He also was an assistant at Hatboro-Horsham for 3 years.
Sowers’ 2016 team, which went 21-3, reached the state quarterfinals. This spring’s team, which went 17-4, was not expected to be a state power but surprised some by advancing to the District 1 AAA semifinals and started 17-1 despite having just one Division 1 commit.
“I loved how this (team) came together,” he said, “We did really well for a group of kids that played really hard.”
Sowers compiled a record of 137-44 at Hatboro-Horsham and led his squad to a share of the Suburban One Continental Conference crown and a state playoff berth in 2010.
