This past March, the PLA delivered 6 goalie sticks, 64 long sticks and 70 short sticks, most of them restrung with “HEADstring” mesh and fitted with new shafts, to Tom McLaughlin, Lacrosse Chair for the Philadelphia Boys Public League.
“These donations are a wonderful contribution toward our efforts to grow lacrosse in Philadelphia,” according to McLaughlin. “We were happy to help give these sticks new life in the hands of players from Frankford, Roxborough, West Philadelphia, Mastery-Shoemaker, Audenried and other Philadelphia public schools. Your generous support for the Philadelphia Public League is greatly appreciated, as always.”
The HEADstring Project (www.headstringproject.com) is a collaborative effort to get sticks into the hands of players in underserved areas of lacrosse while infusing the values and positive message associated with the HEADstrong Foundation™ and its founder, Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori. The initiative, in its third year, allows donated sticks to be refurbished by volunteer student athletes using HEADstrong’s signature lime green mesh. Once completed, the sticks are donated by the PLA to support diversity, inclusion and the growth of lacrosse in Philadelphia.
“We continue to be excited to partner with the HEADstrong Foundation™ and are grateful for their support in helping to expand the game in the region through this program,” said Scott Growney, PLA board member and director of the HEADstrong Project. “Our hope is that the initiative continues to inspire teams and players to organize stick donation drives and volunteer to help refurbish the sticks. In doing so, they can serve their community by spreading blood cancer awareness, communicating lessons about character and determination reminiscent of HEADstrong’s namesake, and supporting lacrosse in non-traditional areas.”Image may be NSFW.

“We wish to thank the PLA and the Philadelphia Public League for their support and interest in helping us promote blood cancer awareness through the HEADstring Project,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President and Nick’s Mom. “It has been particularly exciting to see the response from several dozen high school and college players, who have volunteered their time to collect, restring and recycle sticks and support the program, all this while helping to share the HEADstrong story.”
The PLA, the HEADstrong Foundation™ and the Philadelphia Public League wish to thank the teams and volunteers who have helped with the HEADstring Project to date. The list (current through June 25, 2015) is below. Individuals, coaches and teams can register to support the program by visiting https://mytournamentregistration.com/headstring/. Thanks also to LEAPS Lacrosse, which helped distribute the sticks, and to Heritage Lacrosse, LLC for collecting sticks in connection with the annual Chapter Challenge, a youth lacrosse festival in Chester County, and for helping to implement and administer the program on behalf of the PLA.
