Venerable boys’ lacrosse coach Paul Stankewicz will be honored tonight for his 50 years as a head and assistant coach at Henderson when the Warriors host Owen J. Roberts in a non-league game.

Stankewicz spent 14 years as an assistant to Bob Brinton from 1969-82 and has held the job for 36 years since. His teams are 415-225; last year he guided the Warriors to the championship game of the District 1 and PIAA Class AA tournaments.

A ceremony will be held after the game and a Scholarship Fund is being created in Stankewicz’s name to be given annually. Donations will be accepted at the door and through GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/paul-stankewicz-lacrossescholarship. So far $4,000 of the $5,000 goal has been met.

A reception will be held at Barnaby’s (West Chester) on South High Street.

6 Points Sports Academy URJ Summer Lacrosse Camp for Jewish boys and girls, 4th to 11th grade, Greensboro, N.C. 6 Points Sports Academy is located in a 100-acre, $100 million dollar state-of-the-art athletic and camp facilities of the American Hebrew Academy. At 6 Points Sports Academy, athletes from 35 different states all over North America and 7 different countries participate in a unique camping experience that offers top-level sports coaching and all the beloved traditions of Reform Jewish camping. Within its kind and nurturing community, campers form friendships for life while feeding their passion for their chosen sport – and achieve a higher quality of life as young Jewish athletes. The camp offers three separate sessions of 2 weeks each, with many campers choosing to experience 6 Points for 4 – or even 6 – weeks per summer. The coaches are NCAA level coaches – most of whom have been with the camp since day 1. These coaches – many of which coach the USA teams for Maccabi USA – are skilled enough to challenge the top tiered athlete who comes to camp, and to teach, mentor and guide the lower skilled athletes who love their sport and love being at camp at the same time. This magical experience takes place on the finest camp facility in all of North America. Campers live in air-conditioned college style dorms, with either 1 or 2 roommates that they have the option of selecting prior to arrival at camp.
During each day of the two week long session, campers participate in 4 hours of intensive skill development in one chosen sport (their sports major) and 2 hours of electives. Sports majors include girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, and cheerleading / dance. This year they have added volleyball as a sports major for the first time ever during our 3rd session. Electives include kayaking, rock climbing, gaga, rugby, ultimate frisbee, flag football, 9 square in the air, weight training, cross country, and lacrosse. Jewish values are infused in everything we do at camp, starting with our 6 core values. Values are presented to our campers as ways to live Jewishly, as ways to live humanly, and as ways to live successfully. These values are presented by our Rabbis, faculty, and Jewish life team at camp each morning during our “Sportscenter” value presentation.

.@wchendersonlax coach Stankewicz honored for 50 years of coaching after win over Owen J. Roberts

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/15/18

Paul Stankewicz was asked if he enjoys coaching lacrosse as much today as he did when he began his career at Henderson an amazing 50 years ago.

“Oh yeah; the more work you put into it the more fun it is,” Stankewicz said “It’s the same with the kids; if they put a lot into then they get a lot back. If they don’t they won’t get a lot out of it.”

Paul Stankewicz has coached for 50 years at Henderson lacrosse

Clearly, after 50 years – 14 as an assistant and 36 as head coach – Stankewicz has gotten a lot out of his time at Henderson. And based on Saturday night’s celebration to honor his half-century at the West Chester school, many others have found the work has paid off.

Following the Warriors’ 16-4 win over Owen J. Roberts, Stankewicz was honored in a special celebration for his illustrious career, which probably is not close to ending. More than 50 of his former players and coaches/colleagues, dozens of family members and the West Chester lacrosse thanked him for his service.

The event featured speeches after the game and a presentation of a special drawing by a Henderson student and formal announcement of a Paul J. Stankewicz Book Scholarship, which will go each year to a Henderson senior lacrosse player. Already over $4,100 has been raised. (Click here to make a donation.) A reception also was held at a West Chester restaurant.

“Stank,” as he is affectionately known, only learned four days earlier about the plans for the ceremony, which was supposed to be a surprise.

“When all the people started asking me, how long did you coach, I put up two fingers and they said 20 years?” he laughed. “I said, ‘No, too long.’ After the fifth or sixth person asked me I had an idea something was up. Then my daughter came into town (from the West Coast). It’s tough to keep it a secret.

Paul Stankewicz (in front of easel in middle) is flanked by his players, former players and coaches and family

“I was just glad we won the game (Henderson’s sixth win in a row). Thats the only thing I had on my mind until right after the game.”

Stankewicz admitted the attention was emotional for a man who is known for giving all the credit and attention to everyone else.

“It is overwhelming … it is overwhelming,” he said, “You don’t know what to say; you see all these people and don’t realize how many people you’ve met and touched and worked with.”

Stankewicz – who taught 40 years in the math classroom at Henderson before retiring in 2010 – is a rarity in that he is old-school yet able to connect with all players. He began his coaching career at the age of 21 when he was a student-teacher from West Chester College in 1969. He began teaching math and served as an assistant to Bob Brinton for 14 years until Brinton went to Penn and later West Chester College. Stank, also an assistant football coach, became the head coach and 36 years later he has 416 wins, 12 league championships, and three trips to the state finals – the last being last season when his squad fell one goal short of Springfield-Delco.

“Henderson lacrosse probably would not be here without him,” said Henderson 2018 attackman/middie Pat Keegan, who had three goals and four assists in the game as Henderson improved to 6-3. “Fifty years is a lot of time! That’s a lot of dedication and a lot of wins.

“I think he means more to this school and this program than probably anyone else around.”

Senior Archer Rymiszewski, who had five goals and one assist Saturday, said Stankewicz teaches his players much more than lacrosse skills.

Pat Keegan (left), Archer Rymiszewski

“He just puts in our minds the same mentality every day; you need to hustle all the time and helps a lot mentally and physically,” he said. “He wants you to always do the right thing. He teaches us life lessons. He has taught us how to be a better person; it’s great to have him as a mentor and a coach.”

“This is eye opening,” added Keegan. “It’s pretty hard to believe anyone has been around one sport for 50 years, let alone at one school. The West Chester lacrosse community is very tight-knit. Everyone knows everyone and he knows everyone in the community. he is someone who is there for you day in and day out, whether it’s lacrosse season or not. He will do anything for you.”

never was one to bask in the spotlight so his only concern Saturday was making sure his team played its best.

Bruce Vosburgh – one of the committee members for this ceremony – played for Stankewicz at Henderson when he was the assistant. Vosburgh later started the program at Unionville and coached there for many years; he credits Stankewicz for instilling in him the skills and work ethic needed to be a successful coach and person.

“He is always about the kids and being fair,” said Vosburgh. “I coached in the Keystone Games with him quite a few years and we lost a couple of overtime games because he ran each line evenly. He played everyone because it’s always about the kids and the experience for them.

“When I started the program at Unionville he helped me. We would go to clinics all over the place for years. He’s just a quality person committed to this game. He scouts all the time and sees every team four or five times. I remember he used to come to every Unionville game so we gave him a (Unionville) hat!”

Did Stankewicz think he would spend over 50 years coaching lacrosse?

“Oh no, I thought I was going to be a football coach,” he said. “I did coach football for a long time (as an assistant at Henderson), but I became a lacrosse head coach first so I dropped football.

“I have had great mentors – Bob Brinton, Mike Hancock and Joe Walsh (football coaches at Henderson). I feel very very fortunate. Also, my wife (Judy) was a coach’s daughter, I got a big break.”

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/15/18

The Southern Lehigh Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse teams, along with the Emmaus Boys’ and Girls’ Lacrosse teams, will be dedicating their games on April 21 at Emmaus Memorial Field to the HEADstrong and Pancreatic Foundation, two worthy causes, by selling t-shirts and raffling off items during the game. All of all money raised will be shared with both organizations.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and government advocacy. The organization raises money for direct private funding of research—and advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatic cancer.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network fills the void of information and options by giving patients and caregivers reliable, personalized information they need to make informed decisions. The organizations helps support individuals and communities all across the country in working together to raise awareness and funds to develop more effective treatment options for better patient outcomes. We create a sense of hope and community so no one has to face pancreatic cancer alone.

HEADStrong™ is an non-profit organization that serves the cancer community by granting direct financial assistance to those financially impacted as a result of the disease, by providing complimentary long-term housing and amenities for those displaced to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for comprehensive cancer care and clinic trials through Nick’s House, by funding innovative cancer research through the Nicholas E. Colleluori Lymphoma research fund, by serving family meals and offering outlets of entertainment, by providing fresh groceries to patients being discharged from lengthy hospital stays, by delivering comfort kits to newly hospitalized patients preparing for treatment or transplant, and by lending an arm of support through their peer to peer advocacy group.

The blueprints for the Foundation were conceptualized by Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori in 2006, from his hospital bed while he underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which ultimately clamied his life. Today, Nick’s vision is being fulfilled through the relentless efforts of his family, athletes, and supports across the country uniting in the fight against cancers.

From Press Release

Under the leadership of new Head Coach Todd MacFarlane, Westtown Boys’ Lacrosse got off to an impressive 4-1 start to the season. Led on the field by senior captains Jodany Baltazar, Trent Kellner, and Pierce Eldredge, the Moose have established a balanced attack and stingy defense.

Coach MacFarlane is far from content and knows the competition will only get stronger as the season progresses. “Our only focus is on getting better each day. I’m proud of the work that the boys have put in, but we have a long way to go and we’re far from a finished product.”

New coach Todd Macfarlane
This year Westown welcomed Coach Todd MacFarlane. For 20+ years, Coach MacFarlane has coached and trained players at all levels including: collegiate, professional and international, All-Conference, All-State, and All-American. Most recently on staff at University of Pennsylvania and University of Maryland, he has placed players in programs at Maryland, Loyola, Syracuse, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, UPenn, Harvard, Drexel, Dartmouth, Penn State, and Cornell, to name a few. As a player, he was All-Conference, on the NCAA top points leader board, All-Conference academic, college team captain, and a member of the Anaheim Storm (NLL).

Springfield-Delco downs Archbishop Carroll, 14-13, on OT goal by Little in PIAA title game rematch

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/16/18
Staff Report

What at first felt like a disappointment turned out to be mostly a test run.

Between them, SpringfieldDelco’s Olivia Little and Dana Carlson waited behind the cage for the final 100 or so seconds of regulation in a tied nonleague game with Archbishop Carroll at the Proving Grounds, looking and hoping for the right chance. All they got was a bouncing shot wide of the cage from Belle Mastropietro and a turnover in the teeth of the Carroll defense as the horn sounded.

So when Little got the ball in overtime, she already had most of the options sorted out in her mind.

“A lot of the times, we try to feed from behind, out of the way of the goalie’s stick,” the senior midfielder said. “We try to feed away from the defender or from the opposite side of the stick of the goalie. We try to look at lot opposite-goal. If we don’t see anything, we usually look for three or four passes and then we try to challenge from there.”

When Little challenged, she made it count.

Little’s fifth goal of the game was the decider, a 14-13 victory for Springfield (6-2) over top-ranked Carroll (4-1) in a rematch of last year’s PIAA Class 3A girls lacrosse final.

In terms of intensity and entertainment, Monday’s encore wasn’t too far behind last June’s final – a 9-8 win for Carroll’s first PIAA championship – despite the lessened stakes.

Little took control late with four goals after halftime in addition to two assists. On the final sequence, after Olivia Pace controlled the draw, Little dictated the possession behind the cage. She sent a pass to Carlson, who had rolled through the crease, but Carlson couldn’t control and recycled to Little behind the net. The Saint Joseph’s commit then attacked around the right side of the crease, gained a step on her defender and fired back across the grain to the inside of the right post, beating Carroll goalie Julia Dellaratta with the game-winner.

Those reads, of being active in the crease and drawing free-position shots in the second half, helped Springfield claw back a four-goal deficit. Keeping Carroll’s defense cognizant of the off-ball movement also offered Little her opening.

“We really tried to pressure the crease a lot,” Little said. “Crease is our strong suit, definitely. We have some girls that are really good at crease roll.”

Despite spotting Springfield the game’s first two goals, Carroll led 8-4 with four and a half minutes to play in the first half before Alyssa Long and Carlson tallied in the final minute to reduce the halftime spread to two. Carroll stretched its lead to 11-7 on the first of two Sydney D’Orsogna goals with 15:01 to play. But Springfield wasn’t done, a surge powered in part by its defensive tenacity.

“We definitely could’ve done a better job,” Carroll midfielder Katie Detwiler said. “We had a lot of turnovers that shouldn’t have happened. We had a lot of missed goals that turned into turnovers. We’re just going to have to keep practicing and get it better.”

Little and Mastropietro scored to get Springfield within 12-11 with 3:57 left. Alex Cabahug-Almonte replied within 27 seconds, but Pace and Long restored Springfield to level terms, the latter tallying with 1:52 left to knot the game at 13.

Long, Pace and Carlson scored twice each for the Cougars, while Mastropietro added a goal and two assists. Long and Erin Gormley picked up four draw controls each. But Little added three wins in the second half, shifting an area of strength from Carroll to the Cougars, who won 10 of the last 17 draws despite a 17-12 disadvantage on the game.

Detwiler led Carroll with two goals, three assists and six draw controls. Rachel Matey led the way in DCs with nine to augment a goal and two helpers. Cabahug-Almonte, D’Orsogna, Grace Gallagher, Amber Germer and Madison Henry scored twice each for the Patriots.

.@Stoga_Lax thumps Strath Haven, stakes claim as the heavyweight in the Central League

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/17/18

If there was any doubt that Conestoga is the team to beat in the Central League, the Pioneers emphatically proved Tuesday night that the road to the league championship runs through Berwyn.

Nick Cost buried four goals and added a pair of assists, Tate Kienzle scored twice and set up three more and James Reilly had a goal and an assist to go along with a 20-for-26 day at the faceoff X as Conestoga rolled over previously unbeaten Strath Haven, 17-9, in a battle of the final two league unbeatens.

Strath Haven’s Jeff Conner is defended by Joey Walton (Photos by Matt Chandik)

The Pioneers (5-0, 6-4) jumped out all over Haven, racing out to a 7-1 lead after one quarter and never relenting. In a showcase of the Pioneers’ offensive depth, nine Conestoga players recorded at least one point, including a hat trick from Kent Hjelm and two goals apiece from Will Schnorr and Sean Bailey.

“I think (the Panthers) were definitely a good matchup,” Reilly said. “We had one explosive quarter that I think really put us ahead. That was a huge boost for us, kind of knowing that we have a cushion the rest of the game when they go on runs, where we still have a five, six, seven-goal lead. It definitely helps us mentally.”

It’s hard to come back from an early deficit of that magnitude, but the difficulty is compounded when you can’t get the ball. Reilly was once again masterful, winning his first five draws and going 15-3 in his last 18 draws. When the Georgetown signee and his faceoff unit brought the ball down to the Conestoga attack, the Pioneers responded with an onslaught of shots. Haven first-half goalie Will Brake was very good in the cage, denying 10 shots, but the sheer volume of chances gave the Pioneers the breaks they needed.

“I think we’re finally finding ourselves,” Cost said. “We struggled a bit in the beginning of the year, but I think we’re really coming together. We just rallied together, played hard and played good team ball. We just play together.”

There isn’t one superstar scorer for the Pioneers, but playing against them can be death by a thousand paper cuts. Conestoga had sharp ball movement against the Panthers (4-1, 8-1) and the Pioneers rarely took bad shots. Despite some early struggles against a loaded nonleague slate, the Pioneers have piled up double-digit goals in every Central League game, and there are signs that the offense is rounding into form to match a lights-out defensive unit led by sophomore standout Mikey Prestipino in front of goalie Scott MacMillan (six saves), who has a claim to stake as one of the best goalies in the state.

Conestoga’s James Reilly won 20 of 26 faceoffs

Of course, even a defense that good is going to have to yield something to Jeff Conner. The Virginia midfield signee, who was recently named to the Under Armour All-America game, had another torrid offensive game with five goals and three assists. The good thing for Conestoga, though, was that it limited everyone else besides Ibo Pio, who tallied four times. Conner and Pio were the only Panthers to record points.

“That’s probably the best (defense) we’re going to see all year,” Conner said. “They shut off some options. They press out on the ball really well. When we had the ball on offense, we did what we needed to do, but they have one of the best faceoff kids.

“It’s frustrating when they’re always getting the ball. I just think we need to take longer possessions and keep the ball more on the offensive end.”
