Two-day Warrior National Prospect Invite launched to recognize outstanding HS boys’, girls’ players

TopLaxRecruits.com, Posted 4/5/16
From Press Release

To provide an additional way to get “best in class” high school student athletes in front of prominent NCAA lacrosse coaches from every division, LEGACY Global Sports is launching the National Prospect Invite.Warrior

This two-day lacrosse showcase will be held on July 19 and 20 in Richmond, Va., and is presented by Warrior Sports, a premier manufacturer of high-performance, cutting-edge gear for lacrosse athletes.

To be eligible to participate, high-achieving “uncommitted” high school lacrosse players (boys and girls) from the 2018 and 2019 graduating classes must be nominated via the National Prospect Invite website. Nominations are free of charge and are open to anyone, including parents, family, friends and the players themselves.

Accompanying each nomination will be a coach referral attesting to that individual’s athletic acumen and personal character.

An independent panel of coaches, school administrators and recruiting experts will evaluate all nominations received, and will select a diverse group of high school boys and girls that demonstrate exceptional lacrosse skills and sportsmanship on the field, achieve a certain academic standard, and display integrity and respect in the classroom and community.

“What makes the National Prospect Invite so exciting is that it provides NCAA lacrosse coaches with a terrific opportunity to scout uncommitted ‘best in class’ players that have met a rigorous selection criteria,” explained Chris Boland, general manager of the National Prospect Invite. “We’ve made it easier for coaches to find outstanding talent for their colleges and universities by prequalifying the student athletes and giving them a two-day lacrosse forum in which to demonstrate their skills.”

The inaugural event will highlight players selected from traditional lacrosse hotbed regions headed by high school coaches hand-picked for their knowledge, expertise and distinguished reputations. Regional representatives for boys and girls will include Sean Delaney (St. Joseph’s Prep), Brian Farrell (Boys Latin School), Eileen Ghent (Monmouth University), Bo Perriello (St. Anne’s-Belfield), Tom Rooney (Half Hollows Hills West High School), Chelsea Rosiek (St. Bonaventure University) and Andrew Whipple (Pittsford High School).

Nominations for the National Prospect Invite are being accepted. For more information, visit their website at http://www.nationalprospectinvite.com.

First-year coach Trowbridge brings old-time enthusiasm to Delaware program Tatnall

Jim Trowbridge believes coaches can have a major impact in helping student-athletes become successful.

“I believe lacrosse is a great way to mentor young student athletes and prepare them for college and more importantly life,” said Trowbridge. “Next to parents, I believe coaches and teachers have the most impact on character development during these crucial adolescent and early adulthood years.

Jim Trowbridge

Jim Trowbridge

“I have three teenagers, Aaron is 19, who started his first year at Syracuse University, Jordan is 17, who recently committed to Siena College and my daughter Dara 15 who played goalie up until this year. I have been around some truly inspirational coaches who encourage players to experiment and grow the game.

“I was blessed to be part of a culture orchestrated by Coach Simmons (Hall of Famer Roy Simmons Jr.) from Syracuse who his is arguably the greatest lacrosse coach of all time. Playing lacrosse at Syracuse was extremely competitive and fun. We couldn’t wait to get to practice and that is what I plan to bring to Tatnall.”

Trowbridge, who has coached for over 30 years in Pennsylvania and beyond, is in his first year as head coach at the Tatnall School in Delaware. His team, which went just 1-13 last year, opens today against Tower Hill. Trowbridge does not expect to turn around the program around in one year, but he does expect to help players develop skills and enjoy the game of lacrosse.

“Tatnall is coming off a several losing seasons; last year the team had one win and 13 losses,” he said. “The good news is we can only go up.

“My No. 1 goal is to make the game fun again. If I do this the rest will follow and as a result we will win more games. I have been playing lacrosse and coaching for over 35 years. I still play today and I’m always learning what’s new. I try and run a practice the way I would want to play. I ask myself, “Would I want to do this, would I stay engaged?’ The best part is I get to jump in and play with them showing them by actually doing.

“The game has become too regimented and kids are losing the passion for the game. I try and keep it fun and encourage players to be creative. At the same time I emphasize mastering the basics, the fundamentals.”

Trowbridge was an assistant coach for Garnet Valley from 2011-14 and also coached seven years with Brandywine Youth Club and continues to help out at MapleZone Sports Institute and the American Indoor Lacrosse Association. He has been a part of FCA as a player and coach since 1995.

“I am very optimistic about this year,” he concluded. “We have a great bunch of players who work hard and really support each other. They truly live by the schools motto of we are FAMILY. The parents and Alumni have been extremely supportive.”

.@CourageGame expands with girls’ division added to Memorial Day weekend event at Penn Park

From Press release

Featured on ESPN, the 2015 Courage Game was a groundbreaking lacrosse event to help encourage and support gay youth and promote wider education and awareness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender equality.Coyurage-game-298x300

That game was created by 12-year-old Philly native Braeden Lange and his family after Lange came out and wanted to do something to help other gay male lacrosse players.

This year, the Courage Game is even bigger and better with sponsors like Nike, Gatorade, U.S. Lacrosse and the You Can Play Project. Powered by NXTsports, the Courage Game has added a girls’ division to the May 29 event at Penn Park over the NCAA championship weekend. Girls’ games will be held at the U9, U11, U13 and U15 levels along with boys’ games at the U7, U9, U11, U13, U15, high school and adult levels. No high school girls may participate in the Courage Game to avoid conflicts with NCAA recruiting regulations.

“The core of this event is rooted in gender-related issues, so it made sense to include both genders moving forward,” NXTlacrosse Girls Director Kate Henwood said. “Women’s lacrosse is significantly further ahead of men’s in terms of inclusion and awareness of LGBT issues within our sport, but there’s never been an event to rally behind. Bringing everyone together to one event helps unify and strengthen the message of the Courage Game.”

The Sunday morning games at Penn Park provide the perfect complement to the noon NCAA Division I championship game at Talen Energy Park. College coaches will participate as adult mentors at the Courage Game and all youth girls’ lacrosse players in the greater Philadelphia area are encouraged to attend and play in the Courage Game to support LGBT awareness, especially as it pertains to youth sports participation. Anyone interested in playing can register at couragegame.org.

“I just want all kids to be able to live their truth with pride.” Braeden Lange said.

“We are so excited to be adding girls’ games to The Courage Game this year,” said Scott and Mandy Lange, Braeden’s parents. “Watching the games go from an idea we all had to support our son a year ago to now expanding to girls lacrosse’ and soon other sports is a reward in itself. We’re excited for the message of inclusivity to be supported by so many more people from youth athletes to their parents and beyond.”

Numerous nationwide and local media outlets are expected to attend the 2016 Courage Game. Other Courage Game partners include House of Talent PA, Saxbys, Wegmans, Geno’s Steaks, STX and Bombas.

From Press Release

The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team came through with a 1:21 stretch of solid defensive play to keep Monmouth off the board late and secure an 11-10 victory in West Long Branch, N.J. on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman goalie Jonathan Anastos made his first collegiate start and was stellar, recording 10 of his 13 saves in the second half. Eric Joseph and Kevin Lewis each finished with four points on three goals and an assist, respectively, while Jason Sands and Luke Cummings also chipped in offensively with two goals apiece.

The win marks the second for the Maroon and White this season, moving their overall record to 2-8. With the loss, Monmouth drops to 6-4 this spring.

“I thought Sullivan had a great day at the X, giving us a lot of offensive possessions and chances to score,” head coach Jim Rogalski said. “Anastos had an excellent second half between the pipes and I think that was the difference in the game. We were able to come back from a deficit and show the resiliency we needed, while continuing to follow the gameplan. This is what we’ve been looking for from our young guys and I’m happy with the direction we’re headed.”

Michael Sullivan was dominant for the second straight game at the X, winning 18 of the game’s 25 faceoffs. The freshman won 17-of-24 in the loss to UMBC on Saturday.

Chris Daly (Lower Merion) had two goals and an assist and Eric Berger (Penn Charter) one goal for Monmouth. Nick Hreshko (La Salle) had 11 saves.

Lafayette opened the game strong as Lewis found the back of the net twice in the first seven minutes to take a 2-0 early lead. Monmouth lit the board for its first at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter, but Sands picked up a turnover and finished high at 2:59 to push the Leopard lead to two at 3-1.

The Hawks shifted momentum from the latter stages of the first into the top half of the second quarters, as three straight, including a man-up tally from Dan Bloodgood, gave Monmouth its first lead of the game at 6:33, 4-3. The sides exchanged a pair of goals through the remainder of the half and the game went into the break with the Leopards down just one, 6-5.

The Hawks came out in the second half and scored two goals 11 seconds apart to move the lead to its largest for either side at three, 8-5. After a two-minute stretch without a goal, the Leopards responded, as one from Lewis, followed by two from Joseph knotted the game at eight with 4:55 to play in the third.

Monmouth regained the lead at the 3:24 mark of the third quarter, but Sands netted his second late to take the game into the fourth at 9-9. Dillon Confalone ripped an unassisted tally to open the fourth-quarter scoring with 9:21 to play, but Monmouth responded 15 seconds later to tie it at 10.

With 4:19 remaining, Cummings took a left-wing feed from Confalone and finished low to the far side for the eventual game-winning tally. Monmouth regained control late, calling timeout with the ball in its offensive end and 1:21 remaining. However, Lafayette would not be denied as Keegan Hickey delivered the winning check to thwart a chance at the doorstep as the buzzer sounded on an 11-10 victory.

Episcopal Academy downs @AISowls, 11-10, in first Inter-Ac League showdown

Josie Ferri said it was important to prepare her Episcopal Academy lacrosse team for the rigors of the Inter-Ac League by scheduling some tough non-league games and competing in the highly-competitive St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Spring Fling last weekend.

Julia Hondros

Julia Hondros

That strategy paid off Tuesday when host EA defeated Agnes Irwin, 11-10, on a goal by Taylor Lucey with 2:28 remaining in an Inter-Ac League matchup of the league favorites.

“We played very strong teams in preseason and over Spring Break to help prepare us,” said Ferri, whose team is 8-1 and 1-0 in the Inter-Ac and ranked No. 6 by Phillylacrosse.com. “Agnes Irwin (ranked No. 2) is tough; they are fierce competitors and have a great team so we wanted to practice against the toughest. That’s why we went down to St. Stephen’s last weekend.”

EA defeated both perennial Illinois state champion Loyola Academy and DC-region power Academy of the Holy Cross (MD) in Virginia. It also has defeated Canadian power Hill Academy, St. Ignatius Prep (CA) and Upstate NY power Victor this spring, losing only to DC’s Georgetown Visitation, 12-11.

The tough games probably helped on Tuesday, especially down the stretch when EA staved off a man-down situation for two minutes in the final 2:20 of the game.

Julia Hondros led EA with three goals, six draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers and had the tying goal with 4 minutes to play after Agnes Irwin had been carded. Katie Crager had three goals and an assist, Corinne Zanolli had two goals and two draw controls and Lucey scored twice. Overall, EA won the battle of the draw, 15-8.

Lila Barker poured in six goals for the Owls (3-3, 1-1), while Laura Pansini had four goals and an assist.

“I think it’s a really key win and we’re excited about it, but we definitely have things we want to work on,” said Hondros. “We want to play EA lacrosse every game and want to perfect what we do. But it’s a great win for us.”

Hondros credited the EA defense for helping stymie the Owls in the closing minutes and getting a key stop and groundball in the final 10 seconds. Goalie Sidney Gagnon also had a clutch save in the final minutes.

“It was definitely a roller coaster,” Hondros said. “Our defense played lights out at the end; there were some really key defensive plays.

“Playing down a man is not easy. We had to work as a unit and slide well. We came up with the groundball at the end.”

Agnes Irwin coach Jen Duckenfield – whose team has been hit hard by injuries and is still missing 2015 Co-Player of the Year Hannah Keating (rehabbing from torn ACL) – credited EA for controlling possessions and the draws.

“Injuries have taken their toll, but we will regroup,” Duckenfield said. “We just have to keep working hard.

“We are playing some younger players – even a few 8th graders – but we had our opportunities and did not execute when we needed to.”

“We practice a six-man zone against yellow card (situations) so we were prepared and stayed tough,” said Ferri. “The defense anchored us the whole game. Our transitions and the draw were key as well.”

Ferri was pleased with her team’s grit.

“This year, we are strong, balanced, and connected,” she said. “We have been working hard on being selfless with the ball, playing together all over the field and being resilient when we are down,” said Ferri. “That has carried us. Today we knew we had to play like Villanova – and play until the last second. Literally, it came to the last six seconds.”

Staff Report

The annual “Fallen Heroes Game” between La Salle and DeMatha Catholic (MD) will be held Friday at Latrobe Park at the Under Armour headquarters in Baltimore.

Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion (left) with best friend Lt. (SEAL) Brendan Looney, USN

Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion (left) with best friend Lt. (SEAL) Brendan Looney, USN

The game honors the memory of two true American heroes: First LT. Travis Manion (La Salle), who died in Iraq in 2007; and his best friend and roommate from the US Naval Academy, Navy SEAL, Lt. Brendan Looney (DeMatha), who died in Afghanistan in 2010.

When Travis died he was originally buried in a family plot near his hometown. However, after Brendan passed away, the decision was made to bury both men side by side at Arlington National Cemetery. The decision to do this made national news and was covered by all of the major networks.

The first “Fallen Heroes Game” game was played in 2011 at the Naval Academy. Game two was held in 2012 at La Salle, in 2013 the game was held at Catholic University in Washington D.C. in 2014 the game was held at Penn University’s Penn Park and in 2015 it was held at Anne Arundel Community College (MD).

Travis played lacrosse in high school and wrestled at Navy. Brendan played football and baseball at DeMatha. At Navy, he played football and lacrosse, and was a key member of the Navy team that went to the National Championship Game in 2004.

La Salle is 3-0 and ranked 5th by Phillylacrosse.com. DeMatha, of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, is 3-5.

“The schools do a great job of honoring both fallen heroes and this game is good fellowship,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy. “It’s a positive thing. What are the odds that two young men, best friends, would die serving their country and can be honored by us playing a lacrosse game?”

Admission and proceeds will be donated to Manion/Looney Foundations.

Kenwood High School (MD) 2016 defenseman James Clark III has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Neumann University.

James Clark III profile:

James Clark

James Clark

High School: Kenwood High School, MD

Graduation Year: 2016

Position: Defense

College Choice: Neumann University

Lacrosse Honors: 2 time First-Team All-Division Defenseman

What will you major in/study? Athletic Training

Why did you choose Neumann? “The bond that the team and coaches had with one another seemed as if it was unbreakable. When the other recruits and I went on our visit to Neumann, it felt like a home away from home. After leaving the visit, the only thing I could think about was furthering my education at Neumann University.”

HS team’s outlook for 2016 season? “My team looks very promising right now. We are striving to win our division for the third year in a row. We also have our minds set on making a deep playoff push so that the Kenwood Bluebirds will be remembered.”

From Press Release

The Summer Rise, a girls only lacrosse tournament returns to West Chester University June 4-5. The Summer Rise serves as an end-of-spring tournament for girls teams who want one more weekend of lacrosse or to kick off summer club lacrosse. As part of the Victory Event Series, this tournament runs at an elite venue with the same organization and professionalism that coaches, parents and players come to expect.Summer Rise

Club Teams from across Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania convene on the beautiful south campus fields of West Chester University. The event will be fully staffed with certified officials, field coordinators and NovaCare Trainers at every field. The Vendor Village will include apparel vendors, food and drink concessions and the Official Headquarter tent.

The tournament is spectator friendly with all pool play schedules, standings, brackets, game times, scores and more accessible through the Tourney Machine mobile app. All teams are guaranteed five games to maximize their experience and games will be played both Saturday and Sunday. As the Summer Rise approaches, visit www.TourneyMachine.com and search Summer Rise then add it to your home screen and select which teams you want to follow.

“It is always nice to host a tournament in our backyard of West Chester, PA.” said Victory Event Series’ owner, Jeff Long. “We’ve got an elite facility that allows us to serve the local lacrosse community. We encourage spring rec leagues to enter all-star teams or combo teams to reward the better girls with an end of season tournament. The Summer Rise also serves as a tune-up for club teams before they get into the thick of the summer season.”
