JT Bugliosi (Ohio State commit) scored his third goal of the game with 55 seconds left in overtime as visiting Calvert Hall (MD) defeated Malvern Prep, 7-6, today in an inter-state boys’ lacrosse game.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 8 in the C2C North America Rankings, improved to 5-1 while the No. 5 Friars fell to 3-1. Malvern Prep is also the No. 1 team in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings.

Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly said he called a time out to set up a play to isolate Bugliosi.

“They were shutting off Jacob (Kelly) and Jack (Kinnear), so we moved them behind the goal and played 4-on-4,” said coach Kelly. “We thought JT could beat his guy. We cleared it out and he went down the lane and had a nice bounce shot for the game-winner.”

Both goalies played brilliant games as Joe McSorley (Boston University signee) had 19 saves for the Cardinals and Andrew Clark stopped 14 for Malvern Prep.

Kinnear (Villanova signee) had two goals and an assist and Kelly (the coach’s son, a 2018 UNC commit) had three assists for Calvert Hall.

“It was a great game; Malvern played great it could have gone either way,” said Bryan Kelly. ‘Both goalies played outstanding. I felt like it was a 12-11 game with a lot of good up and down play. Both teams played well.”

Malvern’s Mike Fay tied the game, 6-6, on a goal by with 6:05 left in regulation and then the defenses and goalies clamped down.

Sean Christman, a 2017 Fairfield commit who has been dominant all year for Malvern Prep at the face-off X, won 8 of 15 draws. But Calvert Hall figured a way to neutralize him in the second half.

“Christman dominated us early and we had a tough time clearing,” said Kelly. “They had multiple second chance opportunities. We didn’t have the ball a lot. So we felt we would tie them up at the X and we got some good wing play and executed well as the game went on.”

“Their goalie was excellent,” said Malvern coach John McEvoy, who team got a goal and two assists from Adam Goldner and a goal an an assist from AJ Traynor. “He had eight saves alone in the first quarter. We had quick possessions and good shot but just couldn’t get it in the net. we started pressing a little.

‘I thought we did a good job defensively; six goals in four quarters against a team like that is good. It was a good win for them.”
