Jess Ciarocchi scored three goals and added an assist while Maddie Montibianco posted 10 saves as visiting West Chester Rustin earned an 8-7 victory Tuesday over Unionville, moving it into a tie for first with the Indians in the Ches-Mont League.
The Golden Knights (10-2 overall) and Indians (12-2, ranked 7th by Phillylacrosse.com) are 7-1 in the league with three games to play.
Unionville went out to a 4-0 lead, but Rustin tallied six straight goals by freshman Ciarocchi (three), Tina St .Clair, Kylie Videon, and MIchelle Chessock. Unionville closed the lead to 6-5 with about 10 minutes to play, but goals by Skyler Demis and Ashley Chisholm extended the lead to 8-6 with 4 minutes to play.
Unionville scored off a turnover to pull within 8-6 with 2 minutes left and had possession late, but Montiebianco stopped two 8 meters and a crease roll with 15 seconds to go.
“The win over Unionville was a total team victory,” said Rustin coach Michael St. Clair. “Our defense and goalie (Maddie Montibianco) really stepped up holding Unionville to 7 goals. We did a great job controlling the draws and possessing the ball on offense.
“Offensively, we really spread the ball around and have great balance with our scoring.”
St. Clair acknowledge that the win was one of the biggest for Rustin in years.
“Rustin lacrosse has been off the map for a couple years now,” he said. “Our goal is to bring back the tradition that Dale Watkins and his girls established when our school first opened 10 years ago. Hopefully we can make that happen.”
