Marple Newtown’s undefeated 1987 girls’ team inducted into Delco Athletes Hall of Fame

The 1987 Marple Newtown girls’ lacrosse team – which went undefeated and claimed the District 1 championship – was honored at the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame Dinner at the 78th event April 23 at the Concordville Inn.

The Marple Newtown squad received the Team of Excellence Award. The Tigers, coached by JoAnn Yusko, sent 10 of its 12 starters to Division I programs and six ended up being captains, four won national championships and 15 of thew 18 players became coaches, according to Cynthia (Mathes) Howard, who spoke for the team.

Also, retired Daily Times sports writer Harry Chaykun, now a freelance writer for Phillylacrosse, was the recipient of the Bob Finucane Award for his continued service to Delaware County sports. Chaykun has been covering girls’ sports, most notably lacrosse, for decades.

Also honored as Hall of Fame Inductees at the banquet were former Ridley lacrosse and field hockey great Marie Schmucker, who is head coach at Hatboro-Horsham.
