Why did you choose Neumann? “I chose this school because it was a good academic and athletic fit. I enjoyed the campus because everyone is friendly and show that they truly care for their students.”

HS team’s outlook: “This year is a big year for Garnet Valley lacrosse. We have a large group of talented seniors who are anxious to give their last season all they have. Madi McKee profile:

Madi McKee

High school: Garnet Valley

Position: draws specialist, attack

Grad year: 2019

College committed to: La Salle University

Club team: Steps Philly Lacrosse

Lacrosse honors/major showcases: Presidents Cup, Capital Cup, soon to be participating in the 2017 NXT Girls Summer Showcase

Academic honors/service: Honor roll

Expected major: Communications

Why did you choose this college? “I chose LaSalle University because of many reasons, one being the coaches. The head coach, Coach Candace (Bossell) and the other coaches are exactly what I was looking for in a coaching staff. I like how close the campus is to home and they have an excellent communication program in which I am interested in pursuing. Also, I like the direction the campus and lacrosse program are moving towards. The vision Coach Candace has for her lacrosse program by the time I attend La Salle is one that I can’t wait to be a part of.”

HS team’s outlook for 2017 season? “For our 2017 high school lacrosse season we are anticipating a lot of new things, including new players. We expect them all to bring a great deal of versatility and help with a balanced attack. On our defensive end, our defense will be making lots of forced turnovers and making some big plays. We expect to have a great season.”

Thank Yous: “My mom is someone who has helped me through this entire process. She has helped me with contacting coaches and getting me on their campus’s. My grandparents have helped contribute; they always come to my games and are my biggest fans. I would like to also thank Coach Brooke (Fritz) for helping me get in contact with La Salle. She has helped me with communicating with the coaches at La Salle. I would also like to thank my high school coach, Coach (Jenny) Purvis for the opportunity to be part of the starting line up.”

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/6/17
Staff Report

The 9th Annual Checking For Cancer Invitational will feature 11 varsity games Saturday at three sites in suburban Philadelphia.

This charity tournament benefits programs targeted to community support, research, education and awareness of prostate, colorectal and testicular cancers.

The Haverford School, The Shipley School and Agnes Irwin School will serve as hosts.

At The Haverford School, the host Fords will play Strath Haven at noon.

At Agnes Irwin, the host Owls will face Bishop Ireton (VA) at 10:30 a.m. In another key boys’ game, two-time defending Delaware state champion Salesianum School meets Long Island power Garden City at 2 p.m. at Haverford School.

John Nostrant, coach of The Haverford School, was diagnosed with prostate cancer 10 years ago, and former Georgetown Prep coach, Kevin Giblin, now the head coach at Bishop O’Connell (VA), is now in remission from his colon cancer. John and Kevin were roommates in college and line mates on the lacrosse field as players. They remain the best of friends. Both highly acclaimed coaches helped coach the United States U-19 Men’s Team to the International World Federation Championship in British Columbia in 2008. Each, however, has had to quietly but courageously endure private ordeals that are all too common to the thousands of individuals who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

The two helped create Checking for cancer to hep bring awareness to screening and early detection of cancer. Giblin, who coached at the first few tournaments, returns this year with Bishop O’Connell, which plays Harriton (Pa) at noon.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 217,730 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2010. About 32,050 men will die of this disease this year. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. One man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, and 1 man in 36 will die of this disease. This disease starts in the prostate and if caught before it spreads is highly treatable and curable.

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimated that about 102,900 new cases of colon cancer (49,470 in men and 51,370 in women) and 39,670 new cases of rectal cancer (22,620 in men and 17,050 in women) were diagnosed in 2010. This is a disease that tends to be slow growing and always starts as a polyp which can be found by colonoscopy. Proper screening should yield an almost perfect cure rate.

The good news is that the outlook for individuals diagnosed with prostate and colorectal is better than ever, and the key to a positive prognosis is screening and early detection. Beginning by age 50, men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should begin a pattern of routine screening for cancer prevention. We hope that greater awareness will lead to an appreciation of the importance of screening and heightened vigilance in our battle against these curable diseases.

Checking for Cancer is a non-profit 501(c)3 Organization. For more information on the tournament click here.

Long’s late heroics give @sprlax a 6-5 Central League win over @gvjagslax

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/7/17

As he tends to be, Tom Lemieux was animated in the Springfield-Delco huddle with 38.6 seconds left in Tuesday night’s Central League game at Garnet Valley.

Kyle Long … 3 goals, GW

Granted, part of that was because the Cougars were assessed a timeout that Lemieux swore he didn’t call right before pole Nick Matty scored what would have been a go-ahead goal, but Lemieux didn’t change in the ensuing huddle when Kyle Long’s attempted sailed high and Springfield called timeout.

Long, though, never batted an eye.

“I’m freaking out in the huddle and he just looks at me and goes, ‘relax, Coach, we got this,” Lemieux said with a wide smile.

The Maryland commit backed up his quiet confidence. Long got the ball at X out of the timeout, started out to his left before cutting back, getting his hands free and parking a shot in the far top corner with 4.4 seconds left to give the Cougars a 6-5 win over the Jaguars in a battle of two of the Central League’s best.

“I knew I doing that,” Long said. “I knew they weren’t going to slide and make me put the ball in the net. I saw (former Haverford School standout and Penn State sophomore) Grant Ament do that Sunday night on the Big Ten Network.

“A little left-to-right, fake high and put it up high. I saw that and thought I’d try that out. It felt like Avon Grove last year. They scored three in a row,. That game should have been over two minutes before, but you’ve got to find a way to win. You’re not always going to finish how you want to, but you have to find a way.”

Springfield (3-2, 3-1) looked to have the game sealed up when Long scored his second of the night with 1:17 left to make it 5-3, but that was merely the start of the fireworks. The Jaguars’ Rei Lopez – who finished the night 14-for-15 at the X – won the next faceoff to set up a Jake Buttermore tally.

Nick Matty

Eighteen seconds later, Buttermore did it again after another Lopez win. Luckily for Springfield, though, Andrew Pickett came away with his lone win of the night at the perfect time when Matty scooped up a ground ball, charged downfield and momentarily scored.

All it did was set up a historic moment as Long became the third player in Springfield history to join the 200-point club after 1992 alum Greg Campbell and 2015 grad Lucas Spence. At the rate he’s going, Long will sit atop the list in no time.

“It’s a good group to be a part of with guys like Greg Campbell and Lucas Spence,” Long said. “I knew coming into the season that I needed around 20 points, but I wasn’t keeping track game-to-game.

“I’ve played on some great teams and we’ve played a lot of extra games because of playoffs, and it’s a blessing to have so many great players around me since most of my points are assists. I’ve just got to keep getting better. If I pass it, I pass it, but I’m not too focused on it.”

It didn’t take long for Matty to get over the fact that he’d had a potential game-winning goal taken away.

“I’m over it,” he said. “It’s a team win and that’s all I care about,” Matty said. “I didn’t know what was going on. I thought they called a penalty and heard it was a timeout.”

Jake Buttermore

Garnet Valley (3-2, 3-1) never led despite Lopez’s faceoff mastery as the Jaguars struggled to beat Springfield-Delco All-American goalie James Spence (eight saves). Denny Nealon and Evan Trizonis also scored for GV, and the Jaguars will soon become even more dangerous when two-time All-American Matt Moore returns to the lineup. The Virginia signee warmed up but didn’t play, but he’s expected to return in the next week or two from foot surgery.

“I just had to go to the net at that time,” said Buttermore. “I didn’t care who was on me. It’s pretty hard to stay patient in a game like that because you have to keep your team patient, too.

“This game was basically a possession game, but Springfield came up in the fourth quarter. I have to give it to (Long): it was a hell of a goal.”

It sure was, from a guy who’s had a couple of those.

Malone leads @Fords_Lacrosse past No. 3 Malvern Prep in @InterAcBoysLax opener

Depending on the way you look at it, TJ Malone either had the fortune or the misfortune of coming into high school at The Haverford School when he did.

During his freshman and sophomore years, the Fords went 46-5, including a perfect 26-0 season during his freshman season. Haverford pumped out double-digit All-Americans in that time, which highlighted a stacked roster that relegated Malone to JV duty. That’s the unfortunate part. The fortunate part, though, is that you tend to learn a thing or two from players like that, and it tends to pay off down the road.

Friday afternoon, Malone showed off what he learned in the best game of his career. The junior attackman was unstoppable, scoring five times and setting up an Adam Salvaggio tally as the Fords defeated rival Malvern Prep, 15-11, in the Inter-Ac opener for both teams.

“Playing two years of JV, I was waiting for my chance and when I got the chance to make a difference at the varsity level, I took it and went as hard as I could,” Malone said. “Nothing comes easy, so it’s so sweet when you get your turn and you’ve been waiting and working so hard every single year.

“You wonder when you’re going to get your chance and you know it’s not going to be for a while because of all the stars, but once you finally get it, you’ve got to take it in and do the most you can.”

Safe to say Malone is doing just that. His career day came all of three days after his last career-best when he netted three goals and an assist in a 12-11 win over MIAA power Boys’ Latin. Against the Friars, he was one of seven Haverford goal scorers in the first half, but in the second, he caught fire. Malone routinely abused defenders from X, using his quickness and elusiveness to get wherever he wanted.

TJ Malone

“When I was younger, I didn’t always move my feet and it got me in trouble,” Malone said. “(Friday), I kept moving my feet, not letting them get set and I kept going at them full speed, so they had to back pedal. When they’re back pedaling, they’re not as fast, so I used my body to get in and out and didn’t back down against bigger guys.”

The Friars (5-2, 0-1) opened the season as the Inter-Ac favorites thanks to loaded junior and senior classes and they looked the part when they raced out to five straight wins. By contrast, Haverford (3-2, 1-0) faced uncertainty with the likes of Dox Aitken and Forry Smith off to college.

Friday, though, it was the Fords who looked the part of a top-5 team in the country. Malone, Salvaggio, Peter Garno, Luke O’Grady, Ryan Jacob, Chris Hervada, Joel Trucksess and Connor Mosebrook all scored at least once and Trucksess won the faceoff battle against the Friars’ Sean Christman, 16-14. Haverford did all of that without the services of top scorer Johnny Nostrant, who’s battling an injury that will likely sideline him for a few more weeks.

The faces have changed, but somehow, Haverford keeps finding a way to win. Early losses to McDonogh and St. Paul’s are a distant memory after beating three excellent teams in Culver Academy (Ind.), Boys’ Latin and Malvern.

“Since Culver, we’ve sort of been on a hot streak and sort of found ourselves and we’ve been playing really good lacrosse,” said Garno, who tallied twice and set up two more goals. “Last year, you could kind of predict who was going to score the majority of the goals. This year, people have stepped up when they’ve needed to and the scoring is very diverse.”

Peter Garno

That’s part of what makes the Fords so tough. They’ve got a formidable array of weapons, as is the custom, but your guess is as good as anyone’s as to who’s going to step up in a particular game. They don’t need much time to get it done, either.

Trucksess got the scoring started 16 seconds in by making a great cut and snapping home a Garno pass. Malone, Mosebrook and Salvaggio struck in a matter of 1:57 in the second quarter, while six minutes of game time had barely elapsed by the time Haverford scored four goals late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.

Most importantly, though, Haverford out-toughed Malvern…by a healthy margin.

“They were tougher than us on ground balls,” Friars sophomore defenseman Donny Gayhardt said. “That’s the pride and joy of this program, tough ground balls, and they beat us to them. They beat us fair and square.

Donny Gayhardt

“We took some shots and we need to face adversity better. Coach Nostrant’s going to come out and coach them up every year. You can never sleep on them – ever – and they just beat you on little mistakes. They catch you sleeping and other schools that have that big star rely on him to do it for them and they don’t have all that off-ball cutting and they don’t make you work, but (the Fords) earn all their goals. Congrats to them – they deserve it.”

They did so in spades.

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/9/17

Nick Yi and Chad Allison have been through it all at Shipley.

The senior tandem has been teaming up to fill up the stat sheet for four years since both of them have been starting since their freshman campaigns. In that time, they’ve experienced the highs of a 15-win season in 2015, the lows of a 7-13 season in 2013 and everything in between.

Shipley School won its fifth straight game Saturday at Checking for Cancer

Yi, a Cleveland State signee, and Allison, a Widener commit, are the cornerstones of a strong Gators senior class. Four seniors start on offense for Mark Duncan’s outfit, and it’s no coincidence that Shipley has come roaring out of the gates in 2017. Saturday, the host Gators rolled past Roman Catholic, 18-4, at the Checking for Cancer Invitational for their fifth straight win. In that stretch, Shipley has scored 78 goals, or 15.6 per game.

“I think the secret for us is the closeness of our team,” said Allison, who fired home four goals and set up two others. “We move the ball well on offense and we do well in transition because we’ve been playing together for a while.

“We all started as freshmen now and we worked our way up together, and now that that helps the big group of freshmen that we currently have.”

That infusion of fresh blood has certainly helped. Against the Cahillites (0-4), it was freshman Luke Grayum who erupted with a five-goal, three-assist masterpiece, while fellow 2020 Henry Reed winning 14 of 17 faceoffs and collecting 10 ground balls. These are great games to bring those youngsters along, too.

“It’s great to be able to get the starters a bit of a rest and to be able to put in a kid who can play well,” Allison explained. “We have a lot more depth on our team this year. We used to have one or two solid lines, but now we have about three or four lines who can play.”

Ultimately, though, Shipley’s long-term success lays in the hands of its grizzled senior class.

“A lot of it is due to teamwork and chemistry,” said Yi, who collected three goals and three assists against Roman. “I see a lot of our offense in that (15-win) team from two years ago, but we can be even better. There’s a lot more talent in the younger group.”

Make no mistake about it, though. The Gators know exactly what they want. They won five straight Friends Schools League championships before the class of 2017 entered high school and don’t have one to show since then. Rival Academy of the New Church is again considered the favorite of the FSL and has a 2-0 mark over Inter-Ac schools this year. Defeats at the Lions’ hands in the past two FSL title games linger with the Gators, and they’ve proven to be the team’s biggest motivation.

“The success that ANC is having has had a huge impact on us,” Yi said. “It’s one of our biggest goals to beat them this year and it’s driving us in the offseason. We’re looking for that Friends League championship.”

“ANC beating us in the past couple years has added so much fuel for us,” Allison added. “It’s rough, especially since Shipley won five Friends League titles before I came in. We really want to leave with a championship and we really push that on the team.”

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year of sorts for The Haverford School.

Decimated by graduating multiple All-American standouts in the past two graduation classes, this was the year that the Fords’ foes had circled as the year to take down John Nostrant’s powerful outfit. That belief grew stronger when Haverford School was outclassed in it its opener against McDonogh School and lost the following game to St. Paul’s in overtime.

Four games later, it looks like that “rebuilding” year is a reloading year instead. Saturday, host Haverford School got four goals from Luke O’Grady and a two-goal, five-assist game from the red-hot TJ Malone en route to a 13-10 win over Central League contender Strath Haven at the Checking for Cancer Invitational.

Less than 24 hours earlier, it was Malone who was the goal scorer of choice when he sniped five goals in a 15-11 win over top Inter-Ac contender Malvern Prep. Against the Panthers, he turned provider, assisting on three of O’Grady’s goals to help kickstart the offense.

Joel Trucksess

“I think everyone works as a unit, everyone’s looking for each other, no one’s really selfish and they care about each other,” said O’Grady, a junior Providence recruit. We all like to see everyone get involved, which is one reason why we’re so good.

“I just know TJ is very shifty and has great vision, so I cut off the ball and coordinate a 7 cut. He’s got great vision and he’ll always know where the open guy is.”

Malone’s incredible week came to a close with 10 goals and seven assists in three games, and he established his career-best in points in every game. Parker Henderer and Sage Garito split goaltending duties for the Fords, stopping six shots apiece. Haverford also got matching one-goal, one-assist games from Peter Garno and Gavin Burke, while Joel Trucksess was 14-for-26 at the faceoff X. He and Panthers standout Hunter Mazur split 24 duels evenly.

“We play a lot of the best teams and every good team’s got a good faceoff guy, so I’m playing against a lot of the top talent,” said Trucksess, who scored for the second straight game. “The last two teams (Haven and Malvern) both had senior D-I guys who are both pretty good, so we’ve battled it out pretty tough at the X.

“In the really close games, whoever gets the edge in the faceoffs usually comes out on top. I owe a lot of my success to my wings, helping me get the ground ball.”

The Panthers (5-2) definitely didn’t embarrass themselves. Strath Haven got it as close to 6-5 with a 4-0 second-quarter run thanks to a pair of Tyler Fink goals, part of his career-best five-goal explosion. When the Fords (4-2) started to pull away again late in the third, the Panthers once again put together a 4-0 run, thanks to a goal and two assists from Jeff Conner, part of his five-point day.

Tyler Fink

The Panthers got a goal and an assist from both Will Huestis and Hunter Mazur and Will Brake stopped eight shots. Strath Haven’s two losses have come to Malvern and Haverford, and those games will help sharpen them up for the Central League gauntlet and what they hope will be a long postseason run in Class AA.

“We were trying to have the hardest schedule,” Fink said. “Each year, we try to build up our schedule, so it was a big test and we tried to prove ourselves and I think we made a good run. I think in the fourth, we started finding the holes in their defense and figured it out.”

That’s bad news for everyone on the Panthers’ remaining schedule.

Salesianum School is never satisfied with simply annually being the favorite for the Delaware state championship.

Brett Hobbs

The Sals want to prove themselves against the best that the country – and Canada, for that matter – have to offer. They know that they usually have the most talent of any Delaware team, but they want to test themselves to see how they stack up against the best.

Saturday was no different, and sometimes, playing the best means you find out what you need to work on. Salesianum fell, 8-2, to Long Island powerhouse Garden City at the Checking for Cancer Invitational at The Havertford School behind three points apiece from JP Basile, Sean Coughlin and Finn Gibbons.

The Trojans are another top foe on Salesianum’s schedule, which also includes dates with Hill Academy (11-6 loss), Fairfield Prep (Conn.) and Malvern Prep, among others. Those games will go a long way in helping Bob Healy’s group prepare for a run at another state title, but the Sals struggled against Garden City.

“We made a lot of mental errors clearing the ball, a lot of offsides and we weren’t recognizing the open pass,” said midfielder Brett Hobbs, who scored both Salesianum goals. “It might have been a confidence issue. We’ve got to keep composed and calm down. This helps prepare us for what the ultimate goal is, and that’s a state championship, but we want to show that we’re just a team from Delaware who wants to play big teams and lose. We want to win these games, so it’s a tough loss.”

Other than Hobbs, Salesianum couldn’t get much going offensively, and eventually, the Trojans’ diverse offense wore the Sals down. Basile, Coughlin, Gibbons, Luke Keating, Trevor Yeboah-Kodie and Tyler Wuchte all recorded multiple points for Garden City (4-1).

“I just think it’s in our heads with mental errors,” added Hobbs, a Villanova verbal. “Clearing the ball, working the ball around on offense and recognizing what we need to do to win the game.”

On the other side, Garden City got off to an explosive start and never looked back. Kieran Gunn won the game’s opening faceoff, sprinted downfield and dished to Basile, and the Duke signee did the rest. It’s always a good thing when you’re up nine seconds into the game, but it was Garden City’s defense that kept the Sals at bay. Eric Mueller backstopped a stingy defense with five saves, and the Trojans poured it on with five second-half goals to send Salesianum packing.

“In the second half, (Garden City coach Steve Finnell) wanted a big-little matchup and that’s what we did,” Basile (Duke signee) said. “We had Luke Keating at X, a great middie, and he and I were collaborating together, as well as Finn Gibbons and Sean Coughlin. They were switching on shorties, so that’s where we got most of our offensive matchups from.

It helps when you’ve got the arsenal that the Trojans boast. There are a ton of scoring options at Finnell’s disposal, and it’s difficult for defenses to match up with Garden City for an entire game.

“I think it’s very difficult for teams to match up with us,” Basile said. “We’re all such great friends, we’re seniors now, and I don’t think anyone can guard us overall. If you’re going to put a pole on me, then you’re going to have a shortie on another great player.

“We’re hopefully going to be pretty strong. Ultimately, it’s just listening to Coach Finnell. He knows everything and he drops a lot of wisdom on us, so it’s a lot of credit to him.”

Staff Report

The 6th Annual “Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game” will be held Monday (7:00) when West Chester Henderson (6-2, 2-1) hosts West Chester East (4-2, 2-0) in a Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse game.

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner of the game each year

Drew Bauer died six summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.

WC East coach Jim Schorn, a close friend to Drew and his family, created the memorial event to recognize Drew’s many contributions to the sport and to youth lacrosse with West Chester’s strongest rivalry (Drew played at East and his brother, Nate, was an East graduate while his brother, Sam, graduated from Henderson).

Schorn’s club team, “Man Up,” also donated a Cascade Pro7 helmet that shows East’s colors on one side and Henderson’s on the other to honor the game and the rivalry. Henderson grads and supporters Ryan Cranston and Sean Evans – both of whom were coached by Bauer in post-collegiate leagues – donated time to develop the helmet.

The trophy goes to the winner of the game every year to display in their trophy case. Also, a player who best exemplifies Drew’s commitment to the sport will be recognized after the game as the “Bauer Blue Collar” recipient for exemplifying the many attributes Drew showed as a player, coach and person. The first two years the honoree has been Henderson’s Owen Evans, in 2014 the honoree was Warrior junior Nosh Joseph, in 2015 it was Jack Twohig and last year it was four winners, Henderson’s Kyle Dampman, Jason DePhillips, Cody Pascale and Nick Mascetti,. Henderson has won the game all five years, but each year the games are tight.

This year, True Lacrosse is helping sponsor the event and will award a free shaft to the winner of the “Bauer Blue Collar” award.

Drew began coaching youth lacrosse when he was a sophomore at West Chester East High School and continued coaching after attending college at St. Joseph’s University. He coached several years for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Penn Stars youth team and had been coaching in the West Chester Lacrosse Association since 1998.

Drew, the son of WCLA President Mike Bauer, also coached for many years with the Chester County U-15 team at the Keystone Games as the defensive coordinator. He was to serve as an assistant for the team that competes last summer in the annual event at State College. Drew, along with Schorn, coached Chester County to the gold medal at the Keystone Games in 2010.
