.@Checking4Cancer: Agnes Irwin tops Bishop Ireton (VA) in game shortened by forfeit

By Harry Chaykun
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/9/17

Last year’s Checking for Cancer Invitational at Agnes Irwin School had to be halted during the third game because of snow.

Agnes Irwin’s Natalie Pansini had 8 draw controls and a goal and an assist

Saturday afternoon, Vrginia power Bishop Ireton came to Agnes Irwin for the girls’ feature game, but the contest was halted 18 minutes into the first half after Ireton coach Rick Sofield took his team off the field following a goal scored by a player whose name was not in the official book.

The controversial tally would have cut Irwin’s lead to 6-5. Sofield said the player’s name was in the Checking for Cancer program, and after a discussion, he decided to forfeit rather than continue with the score at 6-4.

“The rules have to be the rules and they have to be enforced,” said Agnes Irwin coach Jenny Duckenfield, whose team is now 5-1. “They had the option of taking the goal off the board and continuing the game, but they chose not to do that.

“This was Checking for Cancer. It’s a little disappointing that there wasn’t more sportsmanship shown. We were looking forward to a good game against a good team.”

Sofield was also disappointed and gave this statement later Saturday night:

“We drove 3 hours for a charity event because we promised a home-and-home (the teams played last year at Ireton) and I felt it was not a safe and sound environment for my players. It was very disappointing, but I felt it was not a safe environment for the team to compete.”

The game itself featured two teams that are perennially ranked among the nation’s top teams. Madison Mote, a junior midfielder who is committed to Notre Dame, had scored one goal and added an assist for Bishop Ireton (6-4), which came into the game with a three-game winning streak and has lost tight games to powers Notre Dame Prep (14-12), Georgetown Visitation (10-6) and Manhasset (8-7). Agnes Irwin was coming off a tough triple overtime loss (13-12) to Inter-Ac League rival Episcopal Academy.

Lila Barker, who is headed to the University of Virginia, scored three goals, Maria Pansini had a goal and an assist, and Emily Wills and Sydney Wolfington also got goals for Agnes Irwin. Freshman Natalie Pansini claimed eight draw controls as the Owls owned an 8-3 advantage in the circle.

“They didn’t have an answer for Natalie,” Duckenfield said. “She was so strong on the draws.”

Pansini, who played as a fourth grader in a program Duckenfield conducted five years ago, is in her second varsity season at Agnes Irwin.

““We’ve really worked on draws in practice,” said Pansini. “We know how (winning) draws can help you win games.

“The other day we let things get to us (in an Inter-Ac League loss to Episcopal Academy). We had to get back to keeping our focus on playing the way we know how to play.”

Barker had one assist but did not get a goal in the triple-overtime loss to EA.

“We were worried too much about the rivalry and not about playing together in that game,” Barker said. “Today we did a better job of working with each other.”

Visiting Avon Grove raced to a 6-1 halftime lead and held off Bishop Shanahan, 8-6, today in a key Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse game.

Brendan Harman led a balanced attack with two goals and the defensive unit of Bryce DeMuth, Alex Muller, James Chastain and Brayden Peck stood out for the Red Devils.

Avon Grove (6-1 overall) is 4-0 and atop the league, while Bishop Shanahan fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Ches-Mont. Downingtown East is 2-0 and Henderson is 3-1.

Also for Avon Grove, Nata Hammond won 12 of 17 face offs and Kevin Malone posted eight saves.

“You have to credit our defense; we played played great when man down,” said AG coach Eric Jackson. “The defense played great, and we had a balanced offense.

“We do need to finish games a little better. We are still trying to figure ourselves out.”

Zack Augustine, Nick Chastain, Jake Smith and Scooter Whiteside each had a goal and an assist for Avon Grove. Sam Goforth had three goals and an assist for the Eagles.

The Devils were happy to get standout Peck back on defense. He had missed the first few weeks of the year after recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus from the wrestling season.

.@wchendersonlax’s Fuller gets Drew Bauer Blue Collar Award, keys 14-6 win over @DubCEastLAX

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/11/17
Staff Report

Steve Fuller had no trouble getting mentally prepared for Monday night’s annual Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game at his home field at Henderson.

Henderson defenseman Steve Fuller (4) was named the Drew Bauer Blue Collar award winner after leading his Warriors to the 14-6 win; he is flanked by Henderson coach Paul Stankewicz (left), Jim Schorn (with Drew Bauer Game helmet) and Henderson assistant Sean Evans

So when Warriors coach Paul Stankewicz told his team that hustling would be the key, Fuller was already jacked.

“As a Henderson played we always want to beat East,” said Fuller. “Before the game coach Stankewicz said the team had to hustle non-stop for us to win. I feel like I hustle non-stop.

“I know a lot of the East players because I play summer ball with them (on Team ManUp Lacrosse) and I felt very comfortable going after them with the ball. I know their moves and I wanted to hustle and make plays.”

Fuller, in fact, hustled his way to being named the Drew Bauer Blue Collar Award winner in leading the Warriors to a 14-6 victory over East.

Drew Bauer died six summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games and coached many players on the recent and current Henderson and East teams as well as others in adult lacrosse.

The win for Henderson (7-2 overall, 3-1 Ches-Mont) was its sixth in a row, while East (4-3, 2-1) suffered its first league loss.

The Warriors led, 7-2, at tr half and were never threatened. Archer Rymiszewski had a big day on attack with six goals and two assist while Brandon Moyer had three goals and two assists. But the Henderson defense also was key in shutting down the East offense.

“I think our defense held it down pretty well,” said Fuller. “And the defense turned into offense and we helped lead to some fast break goals. When we settled the ball we waited for a good shot. Our defensive coach, Bob Marks, had us ready.

“Our checklist at the start of the season are always to beat East and make the playoffs. This game showed us our potential against a team with some good athletes.”

Fuller did not know Drew Bauer, but said his impact resonates throughout the West Chester lacrosse community.

“I did not know him personally, but growing up as a Henderson lacrosse player I have seen his impact,” said Fuller. “Sean Evans (who was coached by Bauer) is an assistant coach and Brian Cranston (a former Henderson great who also was coached by Bauer) taught me a lot through clinics so it was passed down from other people. I can feel the impact.”

Baskin, Giuliani help @LaSalle_Sports dominate @Stoga_Lax, 12-5

Anthony Giuliani and Brett Baskin are a rarity in high school lacrosse, even more so at a perennial powerhouse at La Salle College High School.

You don’t often find players who can start all four years, let alone at a school that threatens for state championships on an annual basis. When the duo were freshmen, though, they might have come into a game like Tuesday’s non league clash with Conestoga a little nervous and unsure of how to handle the big stage.

Sure, it’s early April, but a showdown between two of the top contenders for the first PIAA Class AAA championship has a way of getting to underclassmen. They grip their sticks a little tighter, force passes they shouldn’t, or maybe jump early on faceoffs, in Giuliani’s case.

When you’ve got four-year starters, though, you don’t worry about that kind of thing. The two were the stars that kickstarted the Explorers’ 12-5 rout of the Pioneers today.

La Salle’s Anthony Giuliani dominated at the X (Photo by Matt Chandik)

Baskin, a Johns Hopkins signee, fired home five goals and set up Joey Taylor and Chris Hladczuk for goals. Giuliani, a Penn commit, was 16-for-19 at the faceoff X, including a 5-1 mark in the second quarter that enabled the Explorers to go on a 5-1 run that led to a 7-2 halftime bulge.

“When you’re going in as a freshman, it’s a lot more difficult,” Giuliani said. “But after experiencing it for three years, it kind of gets easier. You know what’s coming, you know the environment.

“I’ve played (at Conestoga’s Teamer Field) once or twice. You kind of get used to it and you know what to expect. We look at every game the same way, and that’s just to outwork our opponents. That’s pretty much what we did.”

Conestoga (7-1, tied with La Salle for No. 2 in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings) came into the game riding high and averaging 14.7 goals per game, but Giuliani’s mastery at the X limited the Pioneers’ possessions. On the flip side, the Explorers (5-1) used precise cuts and unselfish play to get open and tee off on Scott MacMillan, who was still stout enough to make 11 saves. Baskin scored twice and Hladczuk factored on three goals in that 5-1 second quarter.

“Defensively, we didn’t do a good job,” Conestoga defensive midfielder Peyton Jones said. “A lot of guys were ball-watching. They did a good job of swinging the ball around, finding guys open.”

At the heart of it was Baskin. A smaller, shiftier attackman, the future Blue Jay won’t overpower defensemen, but he’s lethal in his off-ball cuts and he’s got a keen eye for finding open teammates. He’s surrounded by a balanced group that also features the likes of Hladczuk (five points), Brendan Meagher (three points) and Matt Clibanoff (three points), but there’s no doubt that Baskin is the ringleader.

Conestoga’s Peyton Jones

“I think I’ve just had more responsibility as I’ve gotten older through the years,” Baskin said. “The coaches trusted me more as I’ve gotten older and I was able to learn early on and it’s paying off.”

Hunter Gregory led the Pioneers with a pair of goals, while Henry Berg and Tommy Sopko posted matching one-goal, one-assist stat lines. The game was an ideal non league game for both teams as they aim to ready themselves for what should be a lengthy postseason run, with an eye on a rematch at West Chester East for the state title.

“Conestoga’s a great team and a great program and we know we’re going to see them down the road, so it was a good win for us,” Baskin said. “We just outworked them. That’s our goal every game: just outwork the opponent from the first whistle to the last and I think we did that.”

There wasn’t any doubt that they did.

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/5/17

Garnet Valley 2019 draw specialist/attack Madi McKee has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at La Salle University.

Madi McKee profile:

Madi McKee

High school: Garnet Valley

Position: draws specialist, attack

Grad year: 2019

College committed to: La Salle University

Club team: Steps Philly Lacrosse

Lacrosse honors/major showcases: Presidents Cup, Capital Cup, soon to be participating in the 2017 NXT Girls Summer Showcase

Academic honors/service: Honor roll

Expected major: Communications

Why did you choose this college? “I chose LaSalle University because of many reasons, one being the coaches. The head coach, Coach Candace (Bossell) and the other coaches are exactly what I was looking for in a coaching staff. I like how close the campus is to home and they have an excellent communication program in which I am interested in pursuing. Also, I like the direction the campus and lacrosse program are moving towards. The vision Coach Candace has for her lacrosse program by the time I attend La Salle is one that I can’t wait to be a part of.”

HS team’s outlook for 2017 season? “For our 2017 high school lacrosse season we are anticipating a lot of new things, including new players. We expect them all to bring a great deal of versatility and help with a balanced attack. On our defensive end, our defense will be making lots of forced turnovers and making some big plays. We expect to have a great season.”

Thank Yous: “My mom is someone who has helped me through this entire process. She has helped me with contacting coaches and getting me on their campus’s. My grandparents have helped contribute; they always come to my games and are my biggest fans. I would like to also thank Coach Brooke (Fritz) for helping me get in contact with La Salle. She has helped me with communicating with the coaches at La Salle. I would also like to thank my high school coach, Coach (Jenny) Purvis for the opportunity to be part of the starting line up.”

Other schools considered:
Quinnipiac, Butler, Elon, Campbell
