Delaware County Christian School 2018 attack Amanda Onumus has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Arcadia University.

Amanda Onimus profile:

Amanda Onimus

High school: Delaware County Christian School, Newtown Sqaure PA

Grad year: 2018

Position: Attack

College committed to: Arcadia University

Expected major: Early Education, Special Education

Why did you choose Arcadia?
“When browsing colleges Arcadia quickly became a top choice. Arcadia’s faculty, community, and all around feel is truly amazing. When I saw that they had the exact major I wanted (early ed, special ed) I knew this school was for me. When I was in contact with coaches I knew that I wanted to play at Arcadia. The coaching staff quickly treated me like their own and were so nice to me. Being able to play the sport I love at a university I love has always been a dream of mine. I am so excited to be a Knight!”

HS team’s 2018 outlook: “Our goal for 2018 is to persevere through trials; being during a game, practice, or in our own lives. Another goal would be to get better at one thing at a time, whether it be shooting left, using our outside hand, catching and passing, or ground balls.”

Thank You: “I want to thank my parents, who for years upon years have supported me in every aspect of lacrosse, driving me to games or practices, buying things for our team, and pushing me to be a better me. I also want to thank my coaches, Ashton Dwyer, for always pushing me to get better no matter what and for always keeping the team healthy, and great and wanting to play lacrosse; Coach Joel Schuster, thank you for the continuous support throughout multiple seasons, and the continuous dad jokes during games and practices, thank you for calming us down during games when we’re all having an off day; Coach Kelsey Yori, thank you for teaching us your skills and making sure we use our outside hand, use 2 hands for ground balls and shooting left. You three coaches are truly a blessing. Lastly, I want to thank my friends, for always sticking by me and my decisions, for always cheering me on and the laughs. Thank you for being so understanding for my sports schedule and my lack of being able to hang out all the time. I truly don’t know what I would do without you all.”

Other schools considered: Coastal Carolina University, Marywood University, Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Gordon College, East Strousburg University

Longstreth Women’s Sports, the official sponsor for Phillylacrosse.com girls’ recruits, congratulates Amanda Onimus. Longstreth specializes in equipment, uniforms and apparel for women’s sports. .@LaSalle_Sports defense stifles @Stoga_Lax, 8-3, in battle of top-ranked teams

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/28/18

For the second consecutive year, it was a nonleague game billed as a battle between two of the PIAA Class AAA contenders. For the second year in a row, La Salle was clearly a cut above Conestoga.

The host Explorers (ranked No. 3 by Phillylacrosse.com) got two goals and an assist from Ethan Masucci, two goals from Matthew Clibanoff and a staunch defensive effort in front of goalie Michael Clibanoff (10 saves) in an 8-3 rout of the visiting Pioneers (No. 5).

La Salle’s Brendan Meagher (left) celebrates a goal with Danny Mallee (Photo by Matt Chandik)

The group of Dan Jordon, Joey Burnham, Brett Mallee and Bob Bohner made life miserable for a Conestoga offense that’s still coming together. It’s a savvy, veteran group, and it’s going to be bad news for anyone who challenges the Explorers this year.

“We only lost one D-mid and one close defenseman, and with Bob stepping up and playing really well, all the kids are just stepping up and showing leadership,” Burnham said. “When that happens, (La Salle defensive coordinator) Coach (Tony) Resch is able to teach us a little bit more and build on what we already know because he doesn’t have to get into basics.”

Conestoga (0-3) also struggled to hang on to the ball without La Salle’s pressure, an early-season hiccup for a team replacing the bulk of its attack.

“I just think our fundamentals weren’t doing too well today,” said Conestoga’s Will Schnorr, who scored a pair of first-quarter goals. “We really killed ourselves on offense.

“Our defense was holding them for long possessions, then we’d get it down at the other end and just turn it over. Ultimately, I think that killed us.”

The Pioneers – who dropped their first two games to MIAA powers Calvert Hall (11-6) and Boys’ Latin (10-9 in OT) – will be just fine down the stretch, particularly if James Reilly keeps getting them the ball. The senior was a perfect 13-for-13 at the faceoff X against a combination of Explorers, and he’s considered one of the best in the state. As a seasoned veteran, Reilly also knows that the tough non-league slate will only help Conestoga, last year’s PIAA Class AAA runner-up.

“Two of them, we really wish we had back, but playing good competition at the beginning of the season will really prepare us for later on,” Reilly said. “It’s always better to lose games in March than in April, May and June when it really counts.”

Conestoga’s Will Schnorr is defended by Joe Burnham (Photo by Rene Schleicher)

This one didn’t count in the league standings, but it sure did in the bragging rights department. La Salle extended its winning streak in the series to four, including last year’s 12-5 win, and it showed why the Explorers are again a PIAA AAA favorite.

La Salle also got solo tallies from Brendan Meagher, Ethan LaMond, Chris Mockaitis and Grant Pinto. A balanced offense, a lights-out defense and a strong goalie is a combination that usually means you’re playing in June.

“The whole team just kind of stepped up and we were ready to go,” LSM Jordon said.

There’s a good chance they’ll be ready all season.

Staff Report

Matt Marker collected six goals and two assists and Todd Gloss scored the game winner as Allentown Central Catholic stunned host Parkland, 14-12, last night in a battle of East Penn Conference boys’ lacrosse powers.

Parkland (0-1), ranked No. 7 in the Preseason Phillylacrosse.com Rankings, built a 12-6 lead early in the fourth period. Then the Vikings (2-0) went on an 8-0 tear as face-off specialist Luke Talago (Syracuse commit) won 15 of the last 17 faceoffs of the game and Nolan Barr posted 14 saves.

Harrison Ike (two assists), Nik Sunday and Daniel Glemser (three assists) each had two goals for ACC. Talago won 20 of 29 faceoffs overall.

“Luke (Talago) played a huge part in our second half comeback,” said Marker, a senior attackman signed with Lehigh. “He allowed us to dominate the possession battle, and he was going up against a great faceoff guy (Alex Albertson) for Parkland.”

Parkland scored two goals to open the fourth quarter and go up 12-6. But Glemser scored two2 quick goals around the 8 minute mark to make the score 12-8. Talago won eight consecutive face offs that resulted in two goals by Marker, and goals by Ike and Sunday to tie the game at 12 with 3 minutes remaining.

After another face off win by Talago, Ike fed Gloss for the go ahead goal with 1:50 remaining in the game. Talago controlled the final face off and passed to Marker, who beat a double team and scored the final goal on a partially open net.

“Our defense played a great game and locked it down in the second half,” said Marker. “It feels great starting out the season 2-0, especially beating such a talented rival in Parkland.

“This win speaks volumes about the character of this team; we never gave up and had an awesome comeback. It should be a fun season.”

Ian O’Neill had three goals and an assist for Parkland while James Cipolla had two goals and three assists and Luke Summers scored twice. Goalie James McLaughlin posted 11 saves.

“It was truly a great game to be part of,” said ACC coach Dan Dolphin. “As a coach, I could not be prouder of how the team overcame a 6 goal deficit, scoring 8 goals in a little more than 6 minutes.

“In my 11 years of coaching at Central, no team has ever come back from being down 6 goals with 8 minutes left in the game. The team willed themselves to win. Parkland is a quality team that we will see again this year in the regular season, and likely in the playoffs.”

Staff Report

High school coaches in Philly, Delaware, South Jersey, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and Central PA are encouraged to nominate varsity players for the Pansini Law Group Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, a weekly feature during the high school lacrosse season that recognizes high achievers in the classroom, on the lacrosse field and in the community.

All boys and girls playing on varsity teams in grades 11 and 12 are eligible to be recognized. Student-athletes who excel in academics as well as lacrosse and who have also given of themselves through service should be nominated by their coaches.

Once again those who are named a weekly winner of the Pansini Scholar-Athlete award will be featured with an interview, a photo and social media coverage on Twitter and Instagram.

This is the sixth year that Firm Owner Michael Pansini has sponsored the program.

See story on 2017 winners.

“We are so pleased to have Pansini Law Group as the sponsor again for this special feature on Phillylacrosse.com,” said Chris Goldberg, owner of Lacrosse Media, LLC, which operate Phillylacrosse.com. “As an educator and coach myself, we seek to recognize the great accomplishments of our student-athletes in the region off the field as well as on the field.”

“My firm and I are honored to support and again sponsor the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll,” said Mr. Pansini. “The firm believes strongly that recognizing those who strive to be their best both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field and who serve others is important.”

Coach recommendations can be e-mailed to Phillylacrosse.com at golax@phillylacrosse.com. Coaches should list the player’s year, position and lacrosse honors, as well as academic honors, school club/organizations and service activities/accomplishments in and out of school. Nominees should show excellence in both academics and athletics
as well as service and leadership.

Once chosen, student-athletes will be interviewed and speak to the value of academics, athletics, service and leadership.

From Staff Report

Springfield-Delco senior attackman Kyle Long became the school’s all-time point leader tonight when he led the Cougars to a 10-9 win over Spring-Ford in a non-league game.

Kyle Long

Long had two goals and four assists and now has 329 career points, passing Greg Campbell (324), a 1992 grad and All-American. Lucas Spence, a 2015 grad playing at Lehigh, is third at 297.

“Greg Campbell is a legend – it’s an honor to be mentioned in the same category as him and the other Springfield greats on that list.

“I have been really fortunate to play on some great teams that played deep into the state playoffs. That has granted me more opportunities to play in more games and have more opportunities to accumulate points. Also, I have played with some great shooters and finishers that have helped me be successful.”

Springfield (2-1), which has won two straight PIAA championships, rallied from a 4-2 first-period deficit and got three goals apiece from Mike Tulskie and Ben Garcia.

Jarrod Marenger had four goals for the Rams (1-2) and Ryan Rosenblum had three goals and an assist.
