From Staff Report

Jackie Lanzalotto said Notre Dame Academy’s 7-6 win today over national power St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA) at its annual Spring Fling was a landmark win for the Irish.

Notre Dame Academy claimed a 7-6 win over National power St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA)

“This is huge for our program,” said the senior goalie. “Our coaches, Xan Zimatore and Maura Wilson, started coaching at Notre Dame my freshman year and since then our team has been working year-round for a win against a nationally ranked program like SSSA, and it is great to be able to do it as a senior.”

Notre Dame (3-1) had suffered a 10-9 loss to St. Johns College (DC) on Friday at the Spring Fling, which annually attracts many ranked teams. St. Stephen’s (10-2) entered play this weekend as the No. 5 team in the Inside Lacrosse rankings.

But the Irish scored twice to break a 5-5 tie and after the Saints drew within 7-6 Lanzalotto (eight saves) made a great stop on a free position shot with 1.8 seconds left to preserve the thrilling win.

“My mind was really clear and focused,” said Lanzalotto on the clinching save. “I knew that if I made the save we would win and I just went for it without hesitation and confidence in myself that I could save whatever shot came at me.

“We went out today knowing that we had nothing to lose. Saints Stevens and Agnes is a great team, but we believed that we could win and we never let up.”

Notre Dame took an early 3-0 lead as Claire Gola, Kelly Coyle (two goals) and Hannah Gillespie (three goals) scored. SSSA came back to tie the game at 3-3, but ND led, 5-3, at halftime.

“The defense was the key to our win today,” said Zimatore (head coach). “Our gameplan going in to the game was to play solid team D and be aggressive when we needed to. Our veteran defense composed of SJ Quigley, Lily Allen, Abby McNamee, Morgan O’Brien, Belle McHugh and Lindsey Barnes really stepped up and played together.”

Lanzalotto said the Irish players are united this season.

“We were successful today because we played as a team. Our ‘slogan’ this year is ‘Rise as One’, and we did that today,” she said. “When someone made a mistake, another player was there to back her up and keep the momentum going.

“We also adjusted well to how SSSA was playing. We figured out what was working best on draws, defense, transitions and how to best score on attack. We played as ‘one’ today because everybody worked together- attack, mids, defense and me.”

What are Notre Dame’s goals this year?

“In the beginning of the season, our team came up with a list of goals for this year,” Lanzalotto said. “We want to win the Inter-Ac and PAISAA. That is our goal every year and I believe that this team, this year can do it.

“We have a great schedule this year, especially this month and we are really looking forward to tough competition from both Inter-Ac and other great PA teams. Today’s game was only our fourth game this season so we’re just getting started!”

6 Points Sports Academy URJ Summer Lacrosse Camp for Jewish boys and girls, 4th to 11th grade, Greensboro, N.C. 6 Points Sports Academy is located in a 100-acre, $100 million dollar state-of-the-art athletic and camp facilities of the American Hebrew Academy. At 6 Points Sports Academy, athletes from 35 different states all over North America and 7 different countries participate in a unique camping experience that offers top-level sports coaching and all the beloved traditions of Reform Jewish camping. Within its kind and nurturing community, campers form friendships for life while feeding their passion for their chosen sport – and achieve a higher quality of life as young Jewish athletes. The camp offers three separate sessions of 2 weeks each, with many campers choosing to experience 6 Points for 4 – or even 6 – weeks per summer. The coaches are NCAA level coaches – most of whom have been with the camp since day 1. These coaches – many of which coach the USA teams for Maccabi USA – are skilled enough to challenge the top tiered athlete who comes to camp, and to teach, mentor and guide the lower skilled athletes who love their sport and love being at camp at the same time. This magical experience takes place on the finest camp facility in all of North America. Campers live in air-conditioned college style dorms, with either 1 or 2 roommates that they have the option of selecting prior to arrival at camp.
During each day of the two week long session, campers participate in 4 hours of intensive skill development in one chosen sport (their sports major) and 2 hours of electives. Sports majors include girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, and cheerleading / dance. This year they have added volleyball as a sports major for the first time ever during our 3rd session. Electives include kayaking, rock climbing, gaga, rugby, ultimate frisbee, flag football, 9 square in the air, weight training, cross country, and lacrosse. Jewish values are infused in everything we do at camp, starting with our 6 core values. Values are presented to our campers as ways to live Jewishly, as ways to live humanly, and as ways to live successfully. These values are presented by our Rabbis, faculty, and Jewish life team at camp each morning during our “Sportscenter” value presentation.

.@ShipleyLax wins @Checking4Cancer thriller over rival @Harriton, 12-11, in OT

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/8/18

Shipley School senior Griff Gallagher knows the full meaning of the Checking for Cancer Tournament.

“This tournament is really big to us; my dad (Dan) was diagnosed with prostate cancer early because of the tournament about 8 years ago and by catching it early he has recovered and is cancer free,” said Gallagher a senior midfielder.

Shipley’s Griff Gallagher (left) and Henry Reed

Saturday at Shipley’s Farm Fields, Gallagher made his father proud by scoring two of his three goals in the last period when the Gators (4-1) rallied from a 9-6 deficit and won, 12-11, over rival Harriton in overtime on a goal by Henry Reed.

The contest was one of four played at the Farm Fields and one of eight overall in a tourney that was in its 10th year and raises awareness and funds to educate the community on early detection of prostate, colorectal and testicular cancers.

While some of the games feature nationally-ranked squads, the Shipley-Harriton contest was an old-fashioned dogfight between two rivals located only a few miles apart. And few of the games in the 10 years could have matched this one for even play and excitement.

Harriton (2-4) took an 11-9 lead on a goal by Leo Wackerman (2 goals) with 1:54 to play off a Charlie Veasey (3g, 2a) feed. But defenseman Will Drake (12 GBs, 5 takeaways) went coast to coast for a goal 23 seconds later and Josh Gallia tied it with :38 to play.

Overtime didn’t last long. Reed (3g ,2a, 9/15 FO, 2TA) won the draw, took it to goal and tallied the game-winner 12 seconds into the extra frame when he converted a feed from Luke Grayum (3g, 2a).

Shipley acted like it had won a championship, celebrating wildly after Reed’s goal.

Harriton coach Joe Proud gives instructions

“It’s mental preparation,” said Reed. “You look forward to those moments since you’re little. To do it against a rival like Harriton, it’s awesome.

“I figured we had possession, here’s our chance to do it now. Luke and I have that chemistry. I knew he was going to throw it. All I had to do was put it in. It’s fun to be able to win this time.”

Both Reed and Gallagher said competing in this event is special.

“The lacrosse played at Checking for Cancer features some of the best matchups in the country this weekend,” said Reed. “For us to be a part of it is great. The atmosphere so much bigger than normal; we had great game fans support.”

“You could tell how excited we were about winning,” added Gallagher. “This has been a big rivalry for us. We exchange wins and losses, lost to them on Senior Day last year (11-6). The defense came up with some big stops and the offense kept rolling in the fourth quarter.”

Michael Stewart scored three goals and Ben Schall added a pair for the Rams while Robbie DePetris had 12 saves in goal.

“It was a heartbreaker for us today but a great game and great cause to be a part of,” Harriton coach Joe Proud said. “Both teams played hard from start to finish and both teams made some great plays.

“Shipley just made the last one. Our goalie, Robbie DePetris, played a stellar game in the net to keep it so tight. Hats off to Coach Duncan and his squad for the win.”

Said Harriton coach Mark Duncan: “We look forward to this game; it’s one of the games we circle on the schedule. A lot of the kids grew up playing in Ashbee or club.

Shipley coach Mark Duncan draws up the game-tying goal

“We love hosting it; it’s been a few years now. It’s an honor. It was a fun crowd and the weather changed (from early forecasts of snow). What;s better than winning in overtime? It’s always great to play against Coach Proud; he is from Western New York at West Gennie and I am from Ward Melville (on Long Island). It’s New York West vs East for us. I am happy to get the win; the boys dug down deep.”

.@DubCEastLAX hosts @wchendersonlax Tuesday night in 7th Annual ‘Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game’

Staff Report

The 7th Annual “Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game” will be held Tuesday (7:00) when West Chester East (2-3, 2-0) hosts West Chester Henderson (3-3, 2-1) in a special Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse game.

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner of the game each year

Drew Bauer died seven summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner of the game each year.

WC East coach Jim Schorn, a close friend to Drew and his family, created the memorial event to recognize Drew’s many contributions to the sport and to youth lacrosse with West Chester’s strongest rivalry (Drew played at East and his brother, Nate, was an East graduate while his brother, Sam, graduated from Henderson).

Schorn’s club team, “Man Up,” also donated a Cascade Pro7 helmet that shows East’s colors on one side and Henderson’s on the other to honor the game and the rivalry. Henderson grads and supporters Ryan Cranston and Sean Evans – both of whom were coached by Bauer in post-collegiate leagues – donated time to develop the helmet.

The trophy goes to the winner of the game every year to display in their trophy case. Also, a player who best exemplifies Drew’s commitment to the sport will be recognized after the game as the “Bauer Blue Collar” recipient for exemplifying the many attributes Drew showed as a player, coach and person.

The first two years the honoree has been Henderson’s Owen Evans; in 2014 the honoree was Warrior junior Nosh Joseph; in 2015 it was Jack Twohig; in 2016 there were four winners, Henderson’s Kyle Dampman, Jason DePhillips, Cody Pascale and Nick Mascetti and last year it was Henderson defenseman Steve Fuller. Henderson has won the game all six years, but each year the games are tight.

Wayne Sporting Goods will donate custom shorts and Team ManUp will give a $50 donation to the Blue Collar winner this year.

Drew began coaching youth lacrosse when he was a sophomore at West Chester East High School and continued coaching after attending college at St. Joseph’s University. He coached several years for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Penn Stars youth team and had been coaching in the West Chester Lacrosse Association since 1998.

Drew, the son of WCLA President Mike Bauer, also coached for many years with the Chester County U-15 team at the Keystone Games as the defensive coordinator. He was to serve as an assistant for the team that competes last summer in the annual event at State College. Drew, along with Schorn, coached Chester County to the gold medal at the Keystone Games in 2010.

From Press Release

The KSF (Katie Samson Foundation) Lacrosse Festival will be celebrating its 18th year. The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2000 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States.

Katie Samson

This year’s festival will be held on Saturday April 28th at Radnor High School, and will be the LARGEST single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country with 54 varsity teams (26 premier boys’ teams and 28 premier girls’ teams on six fields running simultaneously), wheelchair rugby, tennis and basketball games, youth games, 20+ vendors, 10,000+ fans, 50+ major sponsors and 2 FanZones with rides, bounces, rock walls, face painting, BBQ, funnel cakes, raffle prizes, clothing, equipment etc., and a special guest appearance from the Phillie Phanatic!

Games begin at 9:00 am. (see schedule below). Bring your family, we’ll provide the fun!

The Katie Samson Foundation gives back! Over $100,000 was raised in 2017 with the generous support of over 50 sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team. Since 2000 over $1.9 million has been distributed to charities benefiting medical research and providing care for people with spinal cord injuries– patient care (46 percent), research (43 percent), and quality of life (11 percent).

The Event:

The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2000 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States. Motivated by Katie’s perseverance and courage, volunteers in the lacrosse community and beyond support the cause year after year. The festival is filled with activities for the whole family; with exciting lacrosse team match-ups, a demonstration of wheelchair sports, food, fan zones, and a spirit of sportsmanship and purpose. With generous support of over 50 sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team, the Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival has raised over 1.9 million dollars. We appreciate the tremendous support and we hope to see you at the 2018 Festival.

The Highlights:

* 27 premier boys’ and girls’ league-sanctioned regular season games and several youth team games
* The Fest offers these athletes an opportunity to experience a unique community spirit of giving while competing in a challenging sporting event.
* Six fields running simultaneously from 9am to 5pm.
* Over 10,000 attendees
* Disabled athletes demonstrating wheelchair tennis, basketball and rugby games.
* Families from all over the mid-Atlantic region will be enjoying games, rides, boutiques, face-painters, balloon artists, great raffle prizes, plenty of food and of course, great lacrosse. There will be two FanZones which will have “Katie’s Kiddie Korner” for younger fans- with clowns and balloon designs, a Mechanical Bull, Rock Climbing Wall, moon bounces, music, and a visit from the Phillie Phanatic!
* Food vendors in each Fan Zone.
* Boutiques in both Fan Zones guarantee a shopping opportunity for all – including the latest lacrosse clothing and gear at great Fest prices.

The Cause:

The Katie Samson Foundation GIVES BACK! KSF raises money for research to identify a cure for spinal cord injuries and to optimize care and quality of life for spinal cord patients. The foundation also promotes social awareness as the lacrosse community comes together to support the festival. Through Katie’s courage and perseverance, her foundation has successfully raised funds to support spinal cord injury research and rehabilitation programs that provide much needed independence and quality of life improvements for those with spinal cord injuries.

Katie Samson – The Inspiration:

Katie Samson grew up in Wayne, Pennsylvania and attended Radnor High where she was a goalkeeper for the girls lacrosse team. Katie went on to study Art History at Middlebury College where she also played Division III lacrosse and helped her team capture a National Championship in 1999. The following winter Katie suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding and became a quadriplegic.

After months of rehabilitation and encouragement from family and friends, Katie went back to finish her degree and help coach her college team to two more National titles. In 2004, Katie moved to Arizona to pursue her graduate degree where she remained for 6 years. She moved back to the Philadelphia area in 2010 and is currently the Assistant Director of Museum Education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Katie loves traveling, exploring new accessible trails for birding, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Katie also enjoys storytelling as a creative art form and performs for different organizations in Philadelphia. As a peer mentor for people who have suffered spinal cord injury through Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Katie encourages her mentees to seek out adaptive sports and therapeutic programs that have had such a positive effect on her life.

Event Details:

The high school games will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, April 28th. All of the games will be played at Radnor High School. The festival website, www.katiesamsonlaxfest.com, has an amazing inspirational video, the full schedule as well as all the other exciting details. Or visit us on Facebook – KSF Lacrosse Festival. A $10 ($5 for students/under 3 is free!) admission fee allows unlimited access to all activities and rides within the two Fan Zones.

Supporting the festival offers an opportunity to do something meaningful and historic to impact the lives of people affected by spinal cord injuries. The Katie Samson Foundation is a 501©3 corporation. All donations are tax deductible. Please visit our website or contact the Directors of Development, Eric Gorman at KSFlacrossefest@gmail.com with any questions.
