Staff Report

Grace Harding scored with 29 seconds to play to help lift host Penncrest to a stunning 11-10 win over Garnet Valley in a Central League girls’ lacrosse opener.

Penncrest celebrates its win over Garnet Valley

Penncrest (3-0) had not defeated Garnet Valley (3-1) – ranked No. 5 by Phillylacrosse.com – since 2009.

The Jaguars led, 10-8 late in the game, but the Lions later tied it, 10-10, on a goal by Carly Baillis (two goals, one assist) with 1:37 to play while her team was a man down following a dangerous propel call (yellow card). Julianna George (two goals) won the draw and Harding (two goals) tallied the game-winner – while her team was still a man down – before Kenna Kaut (one gal) sealed it with another clutch draw control.

“I couldn’t be more excited to get a win today against a strong opponent like Garnet Valley,” said Harding, a Drexel signee. “I’m really proud of all my teammates for working so hard, being super determined, and not giving up even when we were down. Today was a great team win for Penncrest.

“A win like this gives us a boost of confidence and shows that we can compete. But we just have to take one game at a time and continue to work really hard to keep getting better and gel as a team.”

Mia George added a goal and an assist while Sadie King, Logan O’Donnell and Abby Pennoni scored once goal apiece. Corryn Gamber posted six saves.

“It definitely makes a statement,” said Penncrest first-year coach Caitlin Morgan. “When we took over the program this year, our goal was to turn it around and make it a successful one and be true competitors in the Central League, so a win like this is definitely a step in the right direction.”

Morgan said winning the draw following the tying goal was key since the Lions were a man down.

“We knew we had to win the next draw and maintain possession,” she said. “We practice man down and man up situations every day, so moving the ball and off ball movement while man down was nothing new to us. We kept sending cutters and kept the ball moving and that’s how the scoring opportunities opened up for Carly to tie and Grace for the game winner.”

Staff Report

High school coaches in Philly, Delaware, South Jersey, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and Central PA are encouraged to nominate varsity players for the Pansini Law Group Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, a weekly feature during the high school lacrosse season that recognizes high achievers in the classroom, on the lacrosse field and in the community.

All boys and girls playing on varsity teams in grades 11 and 12 are eligible to be recognized. Student-athletes who excel in academics as well as lacrosse and who have also given of themselves through service should be nominated by their coaches.

Once again those who are named a weekly winner of the Pansini Scholar-Athlete award will be featured with an interview, a photo and social media coverage on Twitter and Instagram.

This is the sixth year that Firm Owner Michael Pansini has sponsored the program.

See story on 2017 winners.

“We are so pleased to have Pansini Law Group as the sponsor again for this special feature on Phillylacrosse.com,” said Chris Goldberg, owner of Lacrosse Media, LLC, which operate Phillylacrosse.com. “As an educator and coach myself, we seek to recognize the great accomplishments of our student-athletes in the region off the field as well as on the field.”

“My firm and I are honored to support and again sponsor the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll,” said Mr. Pansini. “The firm believes strongly that recognizing those who strive to be their best both in the classroom and on the lacrosse field and who serve others is important.”

Coach recommendations can be e-mailed to Phillylacrosse.com at golax@phillylacrosse.com. Coaches should list the player’s year, position and lacrosse honors, as well as academic honors, school club/organizations and service activities/accomplishments in and out of school. Nominees should show excellence in both academics and athletics
as well as service and leadership.

Once chosen, student-athletes will be interviewed and speak to the value of academics, athletics, service and leadership.

Last year, it was an overtime goal and a goal at the end of the second half that gave Episcopal Academy a sweep of its two Inter-Ac League games against Agnes Irwin.

Agnes Irwin’s Emily Wills

At EA Friday night, a goal by Emily Wills at 1:16 of overtime lifted Agnes Irwin to a 12-11 decision over Episcopal Academy as the 10th Checking For Cancer event got off to a rousing start.

The visiting Owls (4-3 overall, 3-0 league) trailed by four goals with seven minutes to play in the first half, were down by three at halftime, then battled back to claim the lead on a goal by Wills 5:52 before the second half ended.

Olivia Dirks got her fifth goal of the game one minute and nine seconds later to pull EA even, then the defenses took over until the half came to a close.

Kacy Hogarth, Grace Bartosh, and Annie Hepburn were among the Agnes Irwin defenders doing solid work, while Episcopal Academy got defensive support from Lauren Rodio, Lindsay Walling, Devon Whitaker, and Phoebe Christos.

Alex Hark came up with the overtime draw control for Agnes Irwin, and the Owls worked to find an opening or gain an advantage on a foul.

“Julieanne Carey passed the ball to me and I was looking for a righty drive,” said Wills, a junior who has committed to Loyola (Baltimore). “Maria Pansini was clearing out (defenders), and I worked for a shooting space (foul).

“When I got fouled again, I just faked high and shot low and then everyone started running at me. I scored a goal in overtime once before, back when I was in the eighth grade. You never forget something like that.”

Wills, with four goals, and Pansini, Hark, and Ellie Kirkpatrick, who all scored twice, led the Agnes Irwin attack as the Owls kept first-year head coach Lauren Wray’s Inter-Ac record perfect.

Wray came to Irwin from Haverford College, where for one year one of her players was Episcopal’s head coach Josie Perri-Tomaino.

“She’s one of the better coaches around,” Wray said. “We were happy to play here tonight, especially with Checking For Cancer and the fact that her husband, Andrew, has had cancer and was recognized at halftime. They’ve gone through a lot in the last year.”

Wray said some changes her team made in the second half turned the game in the Owls’ favor.

“It’s tough playing from behind,” she said. “We took better shots and took better care of the ball.”

Dirks scored five goals and Ally Marino added three for Episcopal Academy, which had lost three games to very talented teams before Friday night’s contest.

“We knew we would be starting over with a new coach this year,” Wills said. “We’re playing with a new mindset and taking each game as it comes along. We were in Virginia during Spring Break and we played well against St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (9-1).

“We know we have some tough nonleague games coming up as well as the rest of our league games. And we know we have to see (EA) again on our field. We’re happy to have come back to win this game.”

St. Anthony’s dominates @Fords_Lacrosse in 10th Annual @Checking4Cancer

For a quarter, Saturday’s 10th Annual Checking for Cancer game between host Haverford School and Long Island power St. Anthony’s looked like a classic between two national powerhouses.

But the Friars used a 6-0 second-period run to seize control and routed the Fords, 16-5. Jake Bonomi led St. Anthony’s with three goals and two assists, Brennan O’Neill and Andrew McAdorey each added hat tricks and Aidan Danenza dished three assists.

“They were a good team and we came out flat and didn’t really work our way back in it,” Haverford senior midfielder Payton Hollway said. “I think their faceoff guys were great and got them the ball a lot.

“On attack, their guys made smart plays and the ball bounced their way a lot. This shows us how much we’ve got to work and the teams around here are just as good as that team. In my opinion, we’re just as good as that team, but today they came out on top.”

St. Anthony’s (2-2) won 20 of 24 faceoffs with Brandon Rizzuto (12-for-14) and Jake Naso (8-for-10) dominated at the X, with Naso also scoring on a fast break on the quarter’s first faceoff. The tandem won all seven second-quarter faceoffs to help the Friars stretch their lead from 2-1 to 8-1, led by Bonomi’s hat trick.

When the Fords (5-3, ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com, No. 9 by Inside Lacrosse) did get the ball at the offensive end, they weren’t able to threaten much, in large part because of a stingy St. Anthony’s defense led by Brady Keneally and LSM Greg Campisi. If Haverford did get a shot, it was routinely tossed aside by Alex Pazienza, who denied 11 shots sent his way.

“Quite frankly, it’s pretty embarrassing to get beat like that, but we have to bounce back and learn from our mistakes,” said Haverford attackman TJ Malone, who had a goal and set up one of Luke O’Grady’s two tallies. “They played a great game and we give them credit, but we should never let that happen again.”

Campisi, Tanner Germain, Jack Walsh, Trevor Tyrer and Joe Duchnowski also scored for St. Anthony’s. Tim Carlson and Connor Devine each tallied once for Haverford, which got eight first-half saves from Sage Garito. If anything, the loss gives the Fords plenty to work on in a pair of nonleague games against Bellevue (Wash.) and St. Joseph’s Prep before the Inter-Ac schedule starts next Friday against Penn Charter.

“Losses aren’t good, but you can always learn from them, and this was a good loss to learn from,” Malone explained. “We got absolutely crushed and it’s a reminder that we’re not good enough just to flip the switch if we have a bad practice. We didn’t have a good practice yesterday, so we can’t expect to have bad practices and then play well in the games.”
