Haverford School topples Garnet Valley, 18-7, in inaugural #10ve Cup

Peter Garno said there was no better way to honor the memory of Kip Taviano than playing Garnet Valley Tuesday night in the inaugural 10ve Cup – and playing so well at the same time.

“Obviously, this means a lot to us,” said Garno, who had four goals in the 18-7 romp. “Every year, Mr. Taviano comes and talks to us about Kip. This is more than just a game; it has deeper meaning.

“We’ve always done the summer event. All of us usually go, but this was great to have a night game – we don’t usually have night games. It’s a special event and going forward it will be an awesome tradition.”

Kip Taviano, a key and extremely popular member of Haverford School’s 2013 squad, He died in a car accident just before graduation. Kip played for the Brandywine Youth Club in Garnet Valley and was close to many in the Jaguars program.

Since his passing, his father, Jim Taviano has worked with Haverford and Garnet Valley to run many events and create the #10VE hashtag (Kip wore No 10) seen all over the Philly lacrosse community. Click here forThe #10ve website.

This 10VE Cup, in some ways, will replace the 10VE Event held the past five years at BYC in early June; also, on May 4 Haverford School will host youth clinics and special club/youth games, an Alumni Game and its Inter-Ac game with Germantown Academy inKip’s honor.

“This is for the right reason; we both support Kip,” said Garnet Valley coach Frank Urso. “It was a tragedy and anything we can do in his memory, we plan on doing.

“They (the Fords) played lights out; that was their best game. I have seen them several times this year and they move the ball extremely well and found the open man. When they had the shot they stuck it.”

Almost forgotten was that Haverford (9-3) is No. 1 and Garnet Valley (8-1) entered play at No. 2 in the Phillylacrosse.com Rankings. Right now, no team in the region is playing at the level being shown by the Fords.

Haverford led the whole way. The Fords (9-3) led, 4-1 after a period and scored two late goals in the second period to open a 9-4 margin, Then they tallied the first five goals of the second half.

Adam Salvaggio added three goals and an assist while Mac Costin and Nolan Cooleen each scoered twice. Bobby Blewitt (1g, 11/17 FO) and Chris Tsetsekos (7/12 FO) dominated at the X and Sage Garito (7 saves) was strong in goal.

Max Busenkell had three goals for the Jags.

“We are fosused on moving the ball as much as possible,” said Garno, signed with Virginia. “We were constantly cutting.”

Haverford coach John Nostrant said the program will continue to support the Taviano family and Kip’s memory.

“We thought about it (the 10ve Cup) and we had a meeting about Jim and (wife) Ellen,” said Nostrant. “They were talking about doing something different than we do in June; Garnet Valley has an unbeleivable program and there was no better way to keep Kip’s memory alive.

“I think about what he brought to Haverford School and what he took; that’s what you want. Kip embodied all that stuff. It’s unfortunate we have to do something like this, but it speaks volumes on him and what he’s done for the Haverford lacrosse program and the whole Haverford community.

“We talk about Kip’s selflessness, his pesonalirty, his humor. These guys know him. It’s important we continue to talk about him.”

Nostrant also was pleased to see his team’s offenive flow. Last week the Fords struggled offensively in a 5-4 win over Malvern Prep.

“I told Frank that his team is fast and very tough,” Nostrant said. “We just shot the ball really well and moved it really well. That was our emphasisc; we didn’t do it against Malvern. Part of it was Malverm didn’t allow us to do it. I was proud of the kids.”

Pennridge’s Frisch can appreciate impact of Strath Haven’s ‘Play for the A’s’ tournament

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/17/19

Pennridge LSM Conrad Frisch competed in the “Play for the A’s” tournament last year Strath Haven, but Saturday the event meant much more.

During the past year, the Ram sophomore learned that his grandmother has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. So after Strath Haven coach and tourney founder Jef Hewlings addressed the teams about the reason behind creating the tourney, Frisch decided to personally thank him.

Conrad Frisch

Frisch, whose team lost to Springfield-Delco, 12-2, in the first of three varsity games, was grateful that Hewlings helped create so much publicity and awareness for a disease that affects an estimated 5.8 million Americans.

“One day I was over at her house and my Grammy was telling stories and couldn’t remember,” said Frisch. “I started to catch on in August and when school started in September I asked my mom whether Grammy was having problems.

“My mom told us grammy has early dimentia that has led to Alzheimer’s. It broke my heart so I looked it up and learned more about it. I went to the tournament last year, but I didn’t know what I was playing for -I had no idea what the ‘A’ meant.

“But this year when the Strath Haven coach started to talk, I teared up. It really was more than a game for me.”

Hewlings started “Play for the A’s” 7 years ago, in honor of his late mother, Shirley, who passed away in 2009 from Alzheimer’s disease. The event has become a staple in the Philly lacrosse scene, raising over $73,000 for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. One hundred percent of event proceeds are shared locally.

“It was awesome,” Frisch said. “I went there and everyone was chipping in right as we walked in. It was awesome to see everyone come together.

“I can’t thank Strath Haven enoug for helping families like mine that have a loved one with Alzheimer’s.”

Frisch has dedicated his play on the field to his Grammy by putting a patch on the side of his helmet.

“After I chatted with him (Hewlings) he said to remember all the good times I have with her,” Frisch said. “I will always cherish talking with him. It was awesome to hear his message because I knew someone had to deal with what I have to deal with.”

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/18/19

The date has been released and registration is open for the Shootout for Soldiers Philadelphia event!

The third SFS Philly event will start on Wednesday, June 26 at 4pm and runs for 24 hours until 4pm June 27 at the Episcopal Academy.

*Registration and Information

SFS Philadelphia raised over $100,000 last year – a level that no other location has ever done in its second year. Can Philly overtake Baltimore and Long Island for the top spot this year?

The goal is to have 2 adjacent fields running simultaneously for 24 hours. Get the word out!

There will be a festival atmosphere with food trucks, music, family activities and, of course, lots of lacrosse. Teams can be traditional and non-traditional. Examples of non-traditional teams; All Goalie Team, Father/Son game, Switch sticks, Costume, and alumni teams are just a few types.

SFS Philly is looking for volunteers to reach out and solicit team participation which is the key to SFS Philly success. Anyone interested, please connect with Chris Bates at cbates@episcopalacademy.org. Also, if you know of a business/company that would like to learn about sponsorship or partnering opportunities with Shootout For Soldiers, reach out to Gabby Steinhardt, Director of Business Development at gabby@shootoutforsoldiers.com or (410) 800-0580 x708.

Shootout for Soldiers Philadelphia, starts Wednesday, June 26 at 4pm and runs for 24 hours until 4pm June 27 at the Episcopal Academy.
*Registration and Information – https://shootoutforsoldiers.com/events/philadelphia-2019/
SFS Philadelphia raised over $100,000 last year – a level that no other location has ever done in its second year. Can Philly overtake Baltimore and Long Island for the top spot this year?
The goal is to have 2 adjacent fields running simultaneously for 24 hours.
