The 19th Katie Samson Festival set for Saturday at Radnor; event features 27 games

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/23/19
From Press Release

The KSF (Katie Samson Foundation) Lacrosse Festival will be celebrating its 19th year this weekend! The KSF Lacrosse Festival began in 2001 and has grown into the premier high school lacrosse event in the United States.

Katie Samson

This year’s festival will be held on Saturday April 27 at Radnor High School, and will be the LARGEST single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country with 54 varsity teams (26 premier boys’ teams and 28 premier girls’ teams on six fields running simultaneously), wheelchair rugby, tennis and basketball games, youth games, 20+ vendors, 10,000+ fans, 50+ major sponsors and 2 FanZones with rides, bounces, rock walls, face painting, BBQ, funnel cakes, raffle prizes, clothing, equipment etc., and a special guest appearance from the Phillie Phanatic! Games begin at 9:00 am. This is a family event!

The Katie Samson Foundation gives back! Over $100,000 was raised in 2018 with the generous support of over 50 sponsors, donations from attendees, as well as fundraising efforts by each participating lacrosse team. Since 2001 over $1.9 million has been distributed to charities benefiting medical research and providing care for people with spinal cord injuries – patient care (46 percent), research (43 percent), and quality of life (11 percent).

The Event:

Motivated by Katie’s perseverance and courage, volunteers in the lacrosse community and beyond support the cause year after year.

The Highlights:

  • 27 premier boys’ and girls’ league-sanctioned regular season games and several youth team games
  • The Fest offers these athletes an opportunity to experience a unique community spirit of giving while competing in a challenging sporting event.
  • Six fields running simultaneously from 9am to 5pm.
  • Over 10,000 attendees
  • Disabled athletes demonstrating wheelchair tennis, basketball and rugby games.
  • Families from all over the mid-Atlantic region will be enjoying games, rides, boutiques, face-painters, balloon artists, great raffle prizes, plenty of food and of course, great lacrosse. There will be two FanZones which will have “Katie’s Kiddie Korner” for younger fans- with clowns and balloon designs, a Mechanical Bull, Rock Climbing Wall, moon bounces, music, and a visit from the Phillie Phanatic!
  • Food vendors in each Fan Zone.
  • Boutiques in both Fan Zones guarantee a shopping opportunity for all – including the latest lacrosse clothing and gear at great Fest prices.

The Cause:

KSF raises money for research to identify a cure for spinal cord injuries and to optimize care and quality of life for spinal cord patients. The foundation also promotes social awareness as the lacrosse community comes together to support the festival. Through Katie’s courage and perseverance, her foundation has successfully raised funds to support spinal cord injury research and rehabilitation programs that provide much needed independence and quality of life improvements for those with spinal cord injuries.

Katie Samson – The Inspiration:

Katie Samson grew up in Wayne, PA and attended Radnor High School where she was a goalkeeper for the girls’ lacrosse team. Katie went on to study Art History at Middlebury College where she also played Division III lacrosse and helped her team capture a National Championship in 1999. The following winter, Katie’s suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding and became a quadriplegic.

After months of rehabilitation and encouragement from family and friends, Katie went back to finish her degree and help coach her college lacrosse team to two more National titles. In 2004, Katie moved to Arizona to pursue her graduate degree where she remained for six years. Katie moved back to the Philadelphia area in 2010 and became an active member of the Katie Samson Foundation.

Katie loves traveling, exploring accessible trails and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Katie recently became Director of Programs for Art-Reach, an art services organization that create, advocates and expands accessible opportunities in arts and culture. Find her on the wall of the most recent inductee class of the Radnor High School Hall of Fame.

Event Details:

The high school games will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, April 27th. All of the games will be played at Radnor High School. The festival website, www.katiesamsonlaxfest.com, has an amazing inspirational video, the full schedule (see below) as well as all the other exciting details. Or visit us on Facebook – KSF Lacrosse Festival. A $10 ($5 for students/under 3 is free!) admission fee allows unlimited access to all activities and rides within the two Fan Zones.

Supporting the festival offers an opportunity to do something meaningful and historic to impact the lives of people affected by spinal cord injuries. The Katie Samson Foundation is a 501©3 corporation. All donations are tax deductible. Please visit our website or contact the Directors of Development, Eric Gorman at KSFlacrossefest@gmail.com with any questions.

La Salle’s Leahy is first boys’ coach to reach 500 wins as Explorers topple SJ Prep

Staff Report

Tony Resch was head coach at Penn Charter when Bill Leahy launched the La Salle College High lacrosse program from scratch in 1992. Resch said he had a suspicion that Leagy would have success.

“We knew each other from (playing on) the Wings and the first few years we’d scrimmage each other,” said Resch, who came to La Salle as an assistant to Leahy in 2003. “His first kids were absolutely brand new to lacrosse, but it was crystal clear each year that he would be successful.”

Leahy has indeed fulfilled that prediction by Resch, considered himself to be one of the premier coaches from the region.

Today at Brady Field, Leahy’s Explorers thumped host St. Joseph’s Prep. 10-1, giving Leahy his 500th career win, the first boys’ coach from Philly to reach the milestone (Radnor girls coach Phyllis Kilgour had 574 wins). According to statistics compiled by LaxRecords, Leahy is the 19th boys’ coach in the country to reach 500 wins.

La Salle’s Bill Leahy (center) is flanked by teammates and assistant coaches after his 500th career victory today vs. St. Joseph’s Prep

Leahy, in his 28th year, is 500-110 overall with 22 Catholic League titles and four states titles. The Explorers – who got four goals from Shane Osborne and solid goaltending from Christian Suter (8 saves) – are 8-4 overall this year and 8-0 in the Catholic League.

“When I came over to La Salle when I loved his consistency and his care and his knowledge as well as his ability to literally build a program from scratch,” Leahy said. “To do anything for that long is a fantastic accomplishment.

“The kids recognzie how much he gives to them not just as lacrosse players. Talk about longevity – this year he is coaching the son of a player he coached. To year-in and year-out produce really good teams; I’d like to think it starts with his leadership and playing the game the right way.”

“His players have respect for the game and respect for the opponent and that’s 100 percent due to his stewardship. La Salle is an equal partner in this and the school is so supportive. I coulnd’t be happier with his accomplishment.”

The players learned late in the game of the 500th win. Leahy, never one to relish in honors – and he has been inducted in every significant Hall of Fame in the region – did receive a water shower and many hugs.

What made it more special was defeating The Prep, the team’s arch-rival.

“They have given us some unbelievable wars in the past so it was nice to have a win over our arch rival be such a milestone win,” Resch said. “It certainly adds to the excitement and pride. For Bill it was a nice icing on a great day.”

The 19th Katie Samson Festival set for Saturday at Radnor; event features 27 games

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/26/19

About The James K. “Kip” Taviano ’13 Scholarship Fund

Established in 2016 by the family, classmates, teammates, and their parents, coaches, teachers, neighbors, and friends of James “Kip” Taviano ’13 in his loving memory, this fund provides tuition assistance to a student of need who would otherwise note be able to attend The Haverford School, with preference for a deserving student-athlete who exhibits strong character, friendship, citizenship, and sportsmanship in all that he does, just as Kip demonstrated in his life.
