Katie Samson Festival: Malvern Prep blitzes Manheim Township, 16-2

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/27/19

There was plenty of buildup as defending Inter-Ac League champion Malvern Prep geared for its meeting this morning with defending PIAA Class AAA champ Manheim Township at the 19th Annual Katie Samson Festival.

But from the start, the marquee battle on Radnor High’s football Stadium (Prevost Field) was a rout between the No. 2 and No. 4 teams in the Phillylacrosse Rankings.

Malvern Prep (No. 2) scored 15 seconds into play and built a 12-1 halftime lead before coasting to a 16-2 victory. The Friars have won five straight and improved to 10-5. Manheim – already with wins over District 1 powers Conestoga and Avon Grove and the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 title in hand – fell to 13-2.

Will Pettit

The Friars dominated every aspect of the game; groundballs, faceoffs (Rowan Almonte was 14 of 21), goaltending (starter Will Pettit had 8, 13 overall) and ball movement. Manheim also was plagued by turnovers, forced and unforced.

“We’ve kind of been building up recently and getting hot which is awesome to see,” said Pettit, a North Carolina signee. “We started the season slow. We were young and we lost a lot of guys on offense so it was tough bulding up. Now we are hitting a hot streak and getting to be a lot of fun to watch.

“We knew they were the defending state champions, and that we had somegthing to prove to them. It was kind of like the best of the best.”

Sophomore Eric Spanos led a balanced attack with four goals while junior Colin McGill had three and sophomore Nick Potemski had two goals and an assist. Junior Colin Hueston and senior Evan Lotz each scored twice and soph Will Peden had a goal and two assists.

Sean Curcio and Tyler Kurtz scored for the Blue Streaks, who have won 105 straight league games and again have established themselves as a PIAA favorite out of Distict 3.

“They have a great team and we had a couple guys banged up,” said Township coach Dan Lyons. “They gave us a great game and one for us to learn a lot. That always helps.

“They get a lot more off ball motion than some of the other teams we play. That will help us improve our defense off the ball.”

Malvern Prep’s last three losses were by one goal, to New Jersey powers Seton Hall Prep and Delbarton, as well as Inter-Ac rival Haverford School. The Friars appear to be peaking with the post-season only weeks away.

“We are hitting our stride,” said Pettit, “and I am excited to see excited to watch us go forward.”

The Fords (13-3) are ranked No. 1 in the Phillylacrosse Rankings and No. 11 by Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse. No. 22 Ward Melville – last year’s national champs – fell to 9-2.

Peter Garno had three goals and two assists for the Fords, including the game-tying goal with just over 2 minutes to play. He had two goals in the final period as Haverford trailed muchof the game, but made the clutch plays.

Sage Garito had 9 saves for Haverford and Geordy Holmes and Jack Leary also scored.

“It was fun to be included in the event,” said Haverford School coach John Nostrant, whose team played the first game at 10 a.m., shown on ESPNU. “It was a great opportunity for our kids to play on a big stage, in the first high school game televised on national TV and come away with a win against Ward Melville – who also shares a tradition of excellence.

“It was fun for the boys, coaches and our families.”

Katie Samson Festival: Archbishop Carroll dominates early, downs Springfield-Delco, 12-7

The Archbishop Carroll girls’ lacrosse team prides itself in playing a tough non-league schedule.

The Patriots knew what kind of challenge they would face when they learned they would be taking on Springfield-Delco, one of the stronger Central League teams and – like Carroll – a team that hopes to make noise in the PIAA Class AA tournament, which begins in about a month, at the 19th Katie Samson Foundation Lacrosse Festival.

Carroll used its superiority on draw controls as well as a standout effort in goal from senior Julia Dellarata in earning a 12-7 decision over Springfield on Radnor High’s Encke Field Saturday morning.

Carroll’s Julia Dellarata (left), Madison Henry

The Pats (10-3 overall, 7-0 Catholic League) secured possession on 12 of 13 draws in the first half, then the teams split even at 4-4 after the break.

“Possession is everything,” Carroll coach Lorraine Beers said. “That’s why the job that Madison (Henry), Kellie Ann (Matey), and Keri (Daly) did was so important today.

“And Julia was fantastic in goal.”

The numbers show that Matey had seven draw controls, including six while the Patriots were building a 9-3 halftime lead. Henry, who initiates the play on the draw, claimed the ball five times (four in the first half), while Daly chipped in with three draw controls.

“We don’t get to practice it that much,” said Henry, a senior who is headed to Bryant University. “But we’ve played together so long that we’ve learned what each other is doing.”

Henry scored the first goal of the first half and the first goal of the second half. Amber Germer was Carroll’s leading scorer with three goals and two assists, and sophomore Karli Dougherty chipped in with two goals and one assist.

Dellarata turned away 11 Springfield shots and was delighted with the way her teammates raced out to a 5-0 lead before the game with 12 minutes old. Germer and Julia Downs took turns scoring and assisting each other in plays 40 seconds apart for the fourth and fifth goals.

Mary Finley and Dougherty got goals late in the opening half to give the Pats a six-goal advantage after the first 25 minutes.

The teams traded scores in the second half before Springfield’s Belle Mastropietro picked up her two goals to closing out the scoring.

“We knew this would be one of our tougher games,” Dellarata said. “I’ve played in the summer with Belle and Julie Schickling, and they’re good players.

“Mr. Hewitt (assistant coach Jeff Hewitt) has been working with me and helping me a lot. The big thing for our defense is making sure we stay involved and stay focused on the game. We have to be sure we keep talking.”

Mastropietro (two goals, one assist) was the only Springfield player with more than one point.

“We’ve had some good games with them over the years,” Beers said of the Cougars, who the Pats defeated for the PIAA Class AAA championship in 2017. “And we still have to play (Central League co-leader) Radnor. We have some games to look forward to and make sure we are ready for.”

Haverford School sweeps at GEICO Showcase; proves its among nation’s best teams

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/29/19

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY. – When The Haverford School has been at its best in years past, the Fords have relief on a collection of offensive weapons, rather than just one or two top scorers.

The 2015 national champion team had college All-Americans Grant Ament and Dox Aitken filling up the stat sheet, but also featured Drew Supinski Forry Smith, Phil Poquie and Brandon Shima to keep goalies busy. The 2015 team’s undefeated national champion predecessor included snipers like Carl Walrath, Hup Hupfeldt, Matt Walters, Brendan McGrath and Will McNamara.

Haverford School’s Chris Tsetsekos won 15 of 21 faceoffs (Photo by Matt Chandik)

Pick a great Haverford team, and you’ll find that defenses could never settle on taking away one player. If the past week for the Fords is any indicator, the 2019 team has championship-caliber talent, too.

Adam Salvaggio tallied a hat trick to go with an assist, Pearse Glavin chipped in a goal and two assists and Peter Garno and Gavin Burke each scored twice as Haverford finished an impressive sweep at the GEICO Showcase on Sunday at St. Anthony’s on Long Island by topping Lincoln-Sudbury (MA), 11-8. The Fords – the top-ranked team in the region by Phillylacrosse.com – also defeated defending New York state champion Ward Melville, 6-5, on a Mac Costin goal with 14 seconds left to play on Saturday.

“It’s awesome, especially having Mac and a combination of of Geordy (Holmes), Gavin and Jack (Leary) at midfield, because if I get the pole to start, Mac can get a short and score a couple goals and then I’ll have a short,” said Garno, a senior signed with Virginia. “The other team doesn’t know who to pole and who to zero in a lot of times, so it leaves a lot of stuff open.”

“It’s pretty cool because there’s a bunch of guys who can initiate, and as the season’s gone on, everyone’s stepped up and played in their roles,” Salvaggio added. “Some guy will be going off, then the next game it’ll be another guy, so it’s hard on the defense because they have to keep guessing who’s going to go off that day.

“Teams can either pole Peter or Mac and both of those guys are awesome middie dodgers and they kind of have to pick their poison there. We just have to go out and see who has the matchup that day and that’s just who you run it through.”

After beating Ward Melville, the Fords zipped home to go to prom, then came back to Long Island on Sunday morning. Despite the bus legs and general tiredness, they were the ones who came out red-hot, racking up an 8-2 lead vs. Lincoln-Sudbury on goals from seven different players. It was enough of a cushion to offset a late surge from L-S, and goalie Sage Garito was good when he had to be with eight saves.

Having a great offense is fun and all, but it’s irrelevant if nobody’s getting them the ball from the faceoff X. Chris Tsetsekos did the honors for Haverford, winning 15 of his 21 draws and corralling 10 ground balls to boot. He and sophomore Bobby Blewett (1-for-2) have been splitting draws lately, but it’s that kind of effort that can get you the starting job for good.

“I didn’t start this game, so it was a different look for the other faceoff guy today after taking a few faceoffs against Bobby Blewett,” Tsetsekos said. “I started taking the faceoffs, I got into a rhythm and things just took off from there.

“With this offense, it’s like, ‘make it, take it,’ every time I win a faceoff. I just know that any guy on our offense is capable of scoring, and when we work together, we’re unstoppable.”

The Fords – No. 11 in last week’s Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Rankings – have won eight straight games after losing back-to-back games to the two top teams in the country in Culver Academy (Ind.) and Salisbury School (Conn.), and that includes a 3-0 mark in Inter-Ac play. They still have to play Germantown Academy and Episcopal Academy to round out the league slate before the playoffs, but by the looks of it, they’re rounding into the form that’s made them champions before (they have won or shared 7 of the past 10 titles) and that’s bad news for everyone else.

“Winning is an expectation at Haverford,” defenseman Ryan Niggeman said. “We have one of the hardest schedules in the country, maybe the hardest schedule, and it says a lot about the team’s perseverance and grit to get the job done day after day.”

Even after one of its craziest days.

Undefeated EA plays for purpose, edges Agnes Irwin, 12-11, to near Inter-Ac title

By Harry Chaykun
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/30/19

Episcopal Academy was playing with a purpose when it hosted Agnes Irwin in an Inter-Ac League game Tuesday afternoon.

“One of our goals was to win the league championship,” senior Olivia Dirks said.

Caroline Burt

It took a goal by junior Caroline Burt with 22 seconds for EA, which trailed at one point of the first half by four goals, to claim a 12-11 decision and take a major step toward clinching the Inter-Ac championship.

EA (16-0) is 9-0 in the Inter-Ac, two games ahead of Agnes Irwin and Notre Dame Academy. EA has league games remaining with Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, Germantown Academy and Penn Charter.

Senior Lindsay Walling, who has missed the entire season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn knee ligament, explained that there was another purpose behind her team’s comeback effort that resulted in a victory.

“We played this game for Mary,” Walling said, referring to Episcopal Academy second grader Mary Andersen, an 8-year-old from Newtown Square who became an honorary member of the EA team Tuesday.

“Mary has leukemia, but she’s in remission now. She decided that for her Make A Wish she wanted to design a fashion print for Lilly Pulitzer. It was on display at King of Prussia Mall last weekend, and some of us from the team went up to see it.”

The print features Mary’s favorite things, including unicorns, the colors pink, purple, and blue, as well as daisies in honor of Children’s Hospital’s Daisy Days, and daffodils, symbol of the American Cancer Society.

“We were talking to Mary’s mom and found out that lacrosse is her favorite sport,” Walling said. “So we decided to invite her to this game and dedicated the game to her.”

Mary got to stand on the sideline with Walling during the contest, went with the players and coaches as they held their post-game meeting, and was given a special shirt as a memento of the occasion. She recently appeared on Good Morning America, and her print design is available at Lilly Pulitzer stores across the country, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Children’s Hospital.

Agnes Irwin fell behind, 2-1, early in Tuesday’s game before scoring six of the next seven goals to gain a 7-3 advantage after only eight minutes had been played. Freshman Marissa White needed just over two minutes to get three goals, and she helped set up a score by ninth grader Cate Parsells.

Devon Whitaker and Olivia Dirks, who both finished with three goals, started the EA comeback, by both scoring twice, and freshman Alexa Capozzoli put the home team ahead to stay two minutes before halftime.

“We tried to come out fast,” Dirks, who chipped in with seven draw controls, said. “When we got behind, we knew we had to focus on our game plan. Even when we went up (by three goals), we knew that might not be enough.”

Capozzoli added EA’s first goal of the second half, then Burt sandwiched a pair of scores around a goal by Agnes Irwin’s Julianne Carey, who also had an assist as well as seven draw controls.

Natalie Pansini got goals less than three minutes apart for AI, and Emily Wills got the tying score with 2:37 left in the second half.

On the ensuing draw, a yellow card against Episcopal gave Irwin possession, but that lasted only a minute before an errant pass resulted in a turnover.

“They started face-guarding (Dirks) in the second half, so we had to make some adjustments,” Burt said. “We were working the ball for that last shot after we got it back. When I thought I had the opening, I just went for it. I took the ball left-handed and made a low shot.”

It was the kind of special play she will remember for a long time, especially because she gave Mary Andersen a very special memory on her very special day.
