Henderson hosts 1st-place WC East Tuesday in 8th Annual ‘Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game’

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/6/19

The 8th Annual “Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game” will be held Tuesday (7:00) when Henderson hosts West Chester East (2-3, 2-0) in a Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse game that also will decide the league champion.

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner of the game each year

Drew Bauer died eight summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular and beloved coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner

The Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game helmet goes to the winner of the game each year.

WC East coach Jim Schorn, a close friend to Drew and his family, created the memorial event to recognize Drew’s many contributions to the sport and to youth lacrosse with West Chester’s strongest rivalry (Drew played at East and his brother, Nate, was an East graduate while his brother, Sam, graduated from Henderson).

Schorn’s club team, “Team ManUp,” also donated a Cascade Pro7 helmet that shows East’s colors on one side and Henderson’s on the other to honor the game and the rivalry. Henderson grads and supporters Ryan Cranston and Sean Evans – both of whom were coached by Bauer in post-collegiate leagues – donated time to develop the helmet.

The trophy goes to the winner of the game every year to display in their trophy case. Also, a player who best exemplifies Drew’s commitment to the sport will be recognized after the game as the “Bauer Blue Collar” recipient for exemplifying the many attributes Drew showed as a player, coach and person.

Henderson has won the game all seven years, but most years the game has been tight.

This year, WC East is the favorite as it guns to clinch its first Ches-Mont title since 2005. East is 13-2 overall and 10-1 in the league; two of its wins are over Bishop Shanahan (one loss) and Avon Grove (one loss) so the title would be outright. If East loses, the Tuesday winner between Shanahan and Avon Grove moves into first place. Henderson is 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the league.

The first two years the honoree has been Henderson’s Owen Evans; in 2014 the honoree was Warrior junior Nosh Joseph; in 2015 it was Jack Twohig; in 2016 there were four winners, Henderson’s Kyle Dampman, Jason DePhillips, Cody Pascale and Nick Mascetti. In 2017 it was Henderson defenseman Steve Fuller and in 2018 it was Henderson’s Joe Saulino.

Wayne Sporting Goods will donate custom shorts and Team ManUp will give a $100 donation to the Blue Collar winner this year. Also, Mid-Atlantic Limousine donates a dozen balls.

Drew began coaching youth lacrosse when he was a sophomore at West Chester East High School and continued coaching after attending college at St. Joseph’s University. He coached several years for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Penn Stars youth team and had been coaching in the West Chester Lacrosse Association since 1998.

Drew, the son of WCLA President Mike Bauer, also coached for many years with the Chester County U-15 team at the Keystone Games as the defensive coordinator. He was to serve as an assistant for the team that competes last summer in the annual event at State College. Drew, along with Schorn, coached Chester County to the gold medal at the Keystone Games in 2010.

Players will be put through offensive and defensive skills, drills and situations as well as uneven and transition play prior to the Showcase beginning. After the team skills training portion is over teams will then face off in the Showdown where players can apply skills they learned during training.

There will be two divisions for the Showdown and teams may register grad year specific or mixed. The UNC coaching staff will work with team administrators and coaches to insure your team is participating the in appropriate division

Individual Registration- “Free Agent” – If your High School JV, Varsity or Club Team is unable to attend, individual players may register as a “Free Agent” and will be placed on a team coached by an NCAA College Coach.

Peter Detwiler scored with 2:38 to play to help host Conestoga defeat Springfield-Delco, 10-7, Tuesday night, clinching the Pioneers their fourth straight Central League boys’ lacrosse championship.

The Pioneers have won two straight titles outright – each year going 11-0 in the league. They finished the regular season 14-3; Springfield is 15-2 and 9-2 in the league.

Detwiler, Joey Allen (one assist), Will Schnorr and Brendan Murphy each scored twice for the Pioneers while Julian Grove had a goal and an assist and Scott Smith scored once. PJ Hewitt won 9 of 16 faceoffs.

“I am proud of how we battled a great Springfield team whose record can speak for itself,” said Conestoga coach Brody Bush. “We knew we would have to outwork and out groundball this team to have a chance.

“I thought our team – and especially our defense – held up great when we played 9 straight minutes on defense in the third quarter.”

Jack Spence had three goals and two assists for the Cougars while Liam Difonzo had three goals and Jack Clark added a goal and two assists. Jimmy Donegan posted 11 saves.

WC East rallies past Henderson, 11-8, to clinch 1st Ches-Mont title since 2005; Grello is ‘Blue Collar’ winner

Staff Report

West Chester East senior midfielder Rocco Grello knew the Vikings had the potential to be a Ches-Mont League champion this year.

“I think we always had great team chemistry,” he said. “Many of us have been playing together since 6th grade and when we were working out in the winter I realized we had something special. Coach (Jim) Schorn always told us we were a special group and that we could do something great this year. We proved it!”

West Chester East celebrates the Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game

Indeed, the Vikings (14-2) became champions, in style, as they clinched their first Ches-Mont League title since 2005 (first outright since 1989) Tuesday night with a dramatic, come-from-behind, 11-8 triumph at Henderson in the 8th Annual “Drew Bauer City Championship Memorial Game.”

The game honors Mr. Bauer, who died eight summers ago in a boating accident in the Sassafras River on the Chesapeake in Maryland. Drew played at WC East and was a popular coach for many years in the West Chester Youth and Keystone Games as well as a player on men’s teams in the county.

The Vikings would have made Drew proud in 2019. They won the City Championship for the first time and did it from behind. This win was one of many big ones in a season that saw East also topple defending champion Avon Grove and defending PIAA Class AA champ Bishop Shanahan in clutch performances.

East (11-1 league) lost only to Downingtown East, and wins the title over Shanahan (10-1) based on the head-to-head win.

Rocco Grello, the Drew Bauer Blue Collar recipient

“It feels great to win with these guys,” said Grello, named the prestigious
“Bauer Blue Collar” recipient for exemplifying the many attributes Drew showed as a player, coach and person. . “I wouldn’t trade it for the world. We just kept working all year and kept getting better every day.”

Henderson (10-5, 7-3) went up, 6-4, early in the third period, but Jacob Greiner fed Jeff Greiner to make it 6-5. The Warriors again took a two-goal lead, but Jacob Greiner (3G) and Jesse Roth (1G, 2A) scored to tie and then Michael Gray (2G) scored with 10 seconds left in the period to make it 8-7.

East salted it in the final frame as Ben DeLaney (2G) scored again and Grello (3G, 2A) added two more insurance tallies.

“We just stuck to our game, pushing transition,” said Grello. “The defense was solid and we have six guys on the field at al times who can score. It’s difficult to stop our offense. We know if our offense keeps pushing, eventually we’ll score.

“I just pushed transition and helped get back on defense. I know if I can get the ball to our offense they can beat their defender any time.”

Why has East been so successful?

“I think it’s the coaching,” Grello said. “We are well-prepared and we know the other team’s strengths and weknesses.”

Grello said clinching the title and winning the Drew Bauer City Championship at the same time makes the evening even more special.

“We have been learning about him for four years,” said Grello. “I have known about him longer since my brother (Mike) played at East.

“It’s really great that they dedicate this game to him. He meant a lot to the community and winning this game is a great feeling.”

Luke Wierman (2G, 1A) stood out at the faceoff X for Henderson and Jeff Benson also had two goals and an assist.

Ellie Hughes made 14 saves and Abington defeated host Wissahickon, 11-10, Wednesday to finish its Suburban One American Conference championship with a perfect 9-0 mark.

“It feels great to win the league undefeated,” Abington coach Mary Elizabeth Klepper said. “The team deserves it and has worked so hard all season for this moment.

“We have played as a TEAM, with everyone contributing. Our motto is relentless, and that’s exactly how the girls play.”

Abington (15-2 overall) opened up a 6-3 halftime lead and went on top 10-4 before the Trojans responded.

Wissahickon went on 6-0 runs to tie the game with 10 with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. The Ghosts’ Kaley Ehnow (2G, 1A) won it with 21 seconds remaining to earn the win.

“Wissahickon beat us on the draw and was able to come up with it in the last couple of minutes when they were making a comeback,” Klepper said. “Ellie Hughes came up with huge saves and kept us in this game and secured the win.

“I am not sure if knowing we already won our league impacted how we played. We learn from the game and get ready for Radnor first (on Friday), and then playoffs. I try to preach staying in the moment and staying present, especially since heading into the playoffs, we need to take care of one game at a time.”

Abby Thomas led the Ghosts with four goals while Maddie Hinkle added three goals and one assist. Grace Hinkle and Shea Gormley each had one goal. Jamira Mashore had a pair of assists while Abby Johnson and Kelly McCallister both had one assist.

For the Trojans (12-5, 6-3), Sam Intrieri scored her 200th career goal and had five on Wednesday. She has 203 overall.

Abby Degroat (8 draw controls) and Emma Baker (six dras) stood out on the circle.

“(We were) playing hard until the end and won the last draw and stormed down the field,” coach Rob Intrieri said. “(We) had an eight-meter shot that went wide and another eight-meter shot that was stopped with less than one second remaining in the game.”

Sam Intrieri said: “It was very exciting to reach 200 goals and share the excitement with my teammates. It would have been nice to get the win, but our team just never quits. This is the most wins we’ve had in our high school careers and we still have more to go.”
