CB West wins first boys’ lacrosse conference championship with undefeated record

Max Dunar picked a perfect night to have a career game.

The junior goaltender for Central Bucks West made 20 saves to help the Bucks toppled Pennsbury, 7-5, and clinch the Suburban One League National Conference championship at War Memorial field.

Not only did West (14-2) win its first conference title since it established the sport in 2002, it capped an undefeated (9-0) league campaign. The Bucks close their regular season today at Radnor as they seek a high seed and first-round home game for the District 1 tournament.

Central Bucks West celebrates it first conference championship

“Max had the best game of his career,” CB West coach Matt Coverdale said. “He absolutely stood on his head. Some of the saves he had in tight; he really was able to see the ball well.

“He definitely was challenged this evening. They were pressing the cage from multiple angles. They’ve got some really strong offensive players. I can’t say enough about Max.”

Dunar embraced the challenge of a championship atmosphere.

“I think it was definitely a step up from how I usually do,” he said. “Everything was flowing, the adrenaline was going. I just trusted myself. I was a little nervous because I knew what was at stake.”

Pennsbury (11-6, 5-4) tied the game, 3-3, with two goals to open the third period, but CB West answered with goals by Jake Lang, Erik Ojert (two goals) and Jake Ojert (one goal, one assist) to make it 6-3 and Pennsbury never got closer than two goals.

Jeff Woosnam (one assist), David Ross and Connor Albrecht also scored for CBW.

“I feel so happy for these guys,” Coverdale said “They’ve worked so hard. They’ve got such great character and discipline the work ethic is there, the understanding of the game is there.

Erik Ojert

“We’ve eked out a number of wins and to be able to capture the title undefeated against a very, very good National Conference, we’re especially proud of what these guys were able to do.

“They’ve adapted very well to a lot of situastions and what teams have tried to do against us and that speaks to their lacrosse IQ and discipline.”

In the first quarter Garrett Hitchens of CB West registered his 500th career face off win.

“It’s great,” Erik Ojert said of winning the conference crown. “It’s something I’ve been after for four years and to get it my senior year is just huge. Pennsbury had a lot to play for. They’re trying to get into the playoffs so we knew they were going to fight. They made it a little closer than we would have liked.

“We were trying to settle on offense we were having some problems with that but our defense stepped up and Max just played out of his mind, he came out possessed. It was crazy.”

The top 24 teams in power point rankings advance to the District One Class 3A tournament, which begins on Tuesday. Pennsbury was ranked 20th on Thursday while CB West was fifth.

Avery Dysart had three goals for Pennsbury.

“We’ve got a lot we’ve got to work on, obviously,” Pennsbury coach Drew Artin said. “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this season. We’re not a perfect product and we have to keep going.

“This is a rebuilding year for us. We’ve got a lot of young guys that are seeing time and we need them to play at a higher level.

“We love our guys and we want them to be successful and play with effort and we can’t ask for more. They fought the whole game. Coming up short is disappointing for us. CB West is a good team and I think we showed there’s a lot of parity among the teams in our league.

“Overall as a team I liked the energy we had. Everyone from both ends of the roster played well. I wish we could have pulled it out but it is what it is.”

ANC defeats Shipley, 14-11, for 6th straight Friends League championship

Academy of the New Church senior Hunter Jaronski said his team has embraced the fact it has one of the smallest rosters in the state.

“We have been battling all year with short numbers, but that’s the beauty of it because everyody is able to play and got good game time experience,” he said. “We had that ‘Next guy up’ mentality.”

Despite having just five reserves and a high dependence on freshmen, Academy of the New Church (18-3) emerged as one of the top teams in the Philly region this year. And today the host Lions won their sixth straight Friends Schools League championship by toppling rival Shipley School, 14-11.

Academy of the New Church celebrates its 6th straight Friends Schools League title

Drew Carr had four goals and two assists and Joey Paterno scored four goals while Jaronski had a goal and three assists and played nearly the entire game as a defender, middie and at the faceoff X as he has done all year.

Meanwhile, freshmen Jack Joyner (two goals, two assists) Tommy Vandegrift (two goals) were keys on attack and another freshman, Nandin Rhodes, started on defense. Yet another freshman, Ryan Kelly, had to play a minute in a key part of the fourth period when starter Griff McGinley (9 saves) had to sit for a 1-minute penalty.

But ANC – which opened a 5-1 lead midway through the second period – never allowed Shipley (12-5) to tie and broke open a 6-5 game at halftime with three tallies to open the third period.

“I am sper excited for our seniors, Hunter, Traut (Layne Trautmann), Drew, Yates (Pendleton), Weston (Trautmann); the whole year they bought in and they got everyone else to buy in,” said first-year ANC coach Jack Forster, who had been the assistant under brother Rob Forster (now an assistant at Penn) the past 5 years. “They passed it down to the younger guys and made my job easy.

“We went through some adversity early on with injuries, but everybody stepped up.”

The game lasted an amazing 2 hours as the team traded hard hits and clutch goals. Shipley refused to wilt and pulled within 12-10 with 5:50 to play on a goal by Braden Lange (two goals). But Carr scored twice to salt the game.

Jaronski, a defensive standout who simply switches to a short stick when ANC goes on offense, also helped ANC win half the faceoffs and the first five of the second half to spark the run.

“It (playing offense) kind of just makes you work harder on defense,” said Jaronski, headed to Johns Hopkins. “You want to make the stop and get back to offense.”

Luke Grayum had two goals and three assists for the Gators while Randall Brown had two goals and two assists, Josh Gallia had two goals and an assist and Henry Reed tallied twice.

“This is the most rewarding one (title) because we put in so much effort,” said Carr. “We watched the film from the last Shipley game (a 9-8 win 3 weeks ago) and we knew everything we did wrong.

“Our freshmen play so well together with us. They don’t have size, but they have heart.”

Shipley’s Spencer Dee (left), Ben Aschkenasy

Shipley senior defenseman Spencer Dee was disappointed only with the loss, but not his team’s effort.

“I am just really proud of the guys,” he said “We worked really hard all season. It (losing) stinks, but everybody put it out there and left nothing out.”

“Like Spencer said, I am extremely proud of this team,” added senior co-captain Ben Aschkenasy. “It was amazing to see some of the juniors and sophomores grow into better players.”

Shipley and ANC will now gear for the National Prep Championships next Thursday at The Hill School. ANC (seeded 5th) will meet No. 4 Hun School and No. 7 Shipley will face No. 2 and defending champion Hill Academy (Ontario).

“We have to just jump into our next practice and go play with intensity,” said Aschkenasy. “We will be playing one of the top teams in the country, but this team has a lot of fight and a lot of star players and when we are on we can play with anybody.”

Staff Report

James Cipolla scored three goals and Greg Santa-Anna added two goals and two assists as Parkland defeated Allentown Central Catholic, 9-8, Monday night at Northampton to claim its second straight East Penn Conference boys’ lacrosse championship.

Parkland (19-0) kept its perfect season going as it toppled the Vikings for third time this year.

Meanwhile, in the East Penn girls’ championship, Morgan Hurd tallid five goals as Parkland toppled Easton, 12-6, for its sixth crown in seven years.

The Parkland boys scored four consecutive goals after falling behind 1-0 and never gave up the lead. The Panthers led 6-4 at halftime and allowed ACC (16-4) to close within one goak only at 9-8 in the final four minutes of play.

Matt Geroulo added two goals for Parkland and Eli Fisher had a goal and two assists while James McLaughlin posted 7 saves.

“It was a great team win for our players and the Parkland program,” said Parkland’s first-year coach, Mike Bender. “We are excited about the accomplishment, but remain focused on what’s next for us.

“Everyone on the roster and staff have been working extremely hard and are well deserving of a repeat EPC championship.”

Matt Scandone had three goals and an assist and Jack McGorry had three goals for the Vikings. Nolan Barr had 11 saves.

Parkland is the No. 1 seed in the District 11 Class AAA tournament and the Vikings are the top Class AA seed.

In the girls’ final, Emily Leiby had two goals and an assist and freshman Kaz Kennedy scored twice to help Hurd on attack for Parkland (13-7).

Riley McDonald collected three goals and an assist and Maddi Caffrey had a goal and an assist for the RedRovers (14-4), who had edged the Trojans, 17-16, in their EPC regular-season game.
