Boys’ lacrosse: Homan goal lifts North Penn over CB East, 10-9, in 3 OT for 1st win over Patriots after 15 tries

Luke Homan scored with 30 seconds left in the third overtime Thursday to propel North Penn to a dramatic 10-9 win over visiting Central Bucks East in Suburban One Continental Conference action, giving the Knights their first win ever over the Patriots.

According to LaxPower records, the Knights (6-1, 4-1) had lost the first 15 games played against CB East (6-4, 5-2).

“It was a great win for our program,” said North Penn coach Rick Smith. “We played a lot of defense in those three overtimes. We had maybe two short possessions in all three overtime periods – maybe we had the ball total of 30 seconds in those three overtimes.

“The biggest key today was communication. When most kids are supposed to be tired in the third overtime, our guys are still talking and sliding and recovering and communicating. It was really, really good.”

Anchoring the defense were the Knights’ three starting close defensemen – Collin McConaghey, Tyler Foulke and Owen Kelly – as well as Matt Rinck in net (18 saves).

“The most important thing in the entire game was we had seven different players that contributed on offense, and our defense just really came to play,” Smith said. “They communicated the entire game. Whether we were in the third overtime or the first quarter, the defense just played really, really fundamentally sound against CB East.”

North Penn led 4-3 at halftime and 8-5 through three quarters, but the Patriots outscored the Knights 4-1 in the fourth quarter, setting the stage for overtime where the Knights found a way to win it.

North Penn has won four straight conference games after falling to Central Bucks South in its opener. Hatboro-Horsham is in first at 5-1 in the conference, followed by North Penn and Central Bucks West.

“It was a great win for our program,” Smith said. “Our league from top to bottom is a very, very competitive league.

“We just can’t afford to overlook anyone. We need to play everyone like it’s a championship game.”

Homan finished with two goals and two assists. Nick Keim and Jake Diamond each added two goals. Reece Udinski contributed a goal and three assists, while Nic Conroy, Danny Payne and Max Lehrman also scored. Eric Diamond Andrew Alexander each added an assist.

“The chemistry we have from our freshmen to our seniors – and we had freshmen today scoring,” Smith said. “We are a well-balanced team right now.

“The important thing is we’re staying healthy. The chemistry is amazing. I have 14-15 year-old kids playing with 17 and 18-year-olds. Just last year they were playing youth lacrosse, and now they’re out there on the varsity lacrosse.”

Ryan Brown, Alec Bracken and Mike Ott each scored twice for the Patriots. Logan Nelsen and Owen Griffin notched a goal and an assist, while Brant Billingsley added a goal.

Michael Ott won 19-of-23 face-offs for the Patriots. Ian Mauer and Liam Rosenthal each registered six saves in goal. Griffin led the team with seven ground balls and McIntosh had five forced turnovers.

Future plans:
Prezioso: “I will be attending Harvard this fall where I would like to study history, government, and biology. My love of history and government is rooted in how the two affect cultures, environments, and economic systems, and I find scientific investigation fascinating. I believe that bridging multiple academic disciplines has the power to unite perspectives to effect change, and I hope to combine a career as a physician working in public service to contribute to and positively impact healthcare. I also plan on playing for the Women’s Varsity Lacrosse Team.”

How do you describe leadership based on your service projects/academics/sports?
Prezioso:
“I believe a leader is someone who is willing to answer the call to lead and therefore serve. In that willingness, they choose to identify and develop the qualities within themselves necessary to have a positive impact on people and the world around them. In doing so, they are able to tap into the best in others and work collectively to achieve common goals. From a personal standpoint, whether I help raise funds for a cause, collaborate within the classroom, tutor students, or shepherd a group of teammates on the lacrosse field, my hope is that I set an example for those around me and inspire them to become the best version of themselves whereby we benefit our community and society.”

How do you balance academics and athletics?
Prezioso:
“My key to balancing academics and athletics is that I choose classes and a sport that I love. If you enjoy what you do, then disciplining yourself and managing your time effectively in order to accomplish what needs to be accomplished is manageable and fun.”

Coaches may nominate players for the Pansini Law Group Scholar-Athlete award by e-mailing us at golax@phillylacrosse.com. The e-mail should provide all information on academics, service and lacrosse and a photo must be provided or arranged. 2016 National 175 Best of the Best Club Team Showcase, HS Division Locations – Mitchel Athletic Complex, Nassau Community College, Kellenberg Memorial HS, Cantiague Park. Youth Division Location TBA. The National 175 Best of the Best Club Team Showcase was conceived on the premise that the strongest programs in the country want to compete against each other in order to establish which program really is the best team in each graduation year across the nation. Much as the efforts of rankings in high school or college lacrosse are not an exact science, neither is this, but we are attempting to establish a team showcase tournament that includes what the National 175 organizers believe are the strongest programs in the country. Our team showcase is a team event whereby the limited teams invited and attending have been carefully selected. Each of these programs/teams have been recognized as top programs committed to the development of the student athlete and with players seeking to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. To apply for the Best of the Best, contact info@nat175.com.

The Mid Atlantic Showcase is an individual recruiting event for boys rising freshman (2020s) through rising senior (2017s) that gives them the opportunity to showcase their athletic skill set, lacrosse IQ, and their ability to adjust their game to the skill sets of those around them. College Coaches are given the ability to evaluate a player’s athletic skill set while also getting to assess their academic profile as it relates to their college/universities academic profile. We are expecting over 70 college coaches to attend this year’s inaugural Mid Atlantic Showcase with the University of Maryland already confirmed to attend.
Players will get the opportunity to get a 1-hour training session in the morning before the showcase games begin from the coaches in attendance learning new position specific skill sets as well as team concepts testing your lacrosse IQ and ability to enhance your game. College Coaches will also take this time to tell you what THEY are looking for throughout the day and what YOU can do to get yourself recruited.
Teams will be made up of 20-21 players (2 goalies, 4 defenders, 2 lsm, 1 FO specialist, 8 midfielders, and 4-5 attack man) and compete in THREE 50 minute showcase games using NCAA Rules. In between game players will have the opportunity to attend an additional 30 -minute nutrition information seminar at the MSI Sport Village Complex.
The ELITE-42 Showcase Game:
At the conclusion of the day, the top 42 players will be selected after our evaluations have been talented.

National 175 Summer Showcase, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 110 8th Street, Troy, NY 12180, July 25-27th, 2016. Welcome to the 5th annual 2016 National 175 Summer Showcase hosted at RPI. This is the premier lacrosse recruiting showcase that provides the platform for the most talented players to showcase their abilities in front of college lacrosse coaches seeking to recruit players from all over the lacrosse community. Based on recommendations from our college coaches and some of the major club team directors we have made a decision to move our Flagship National 175 Summer Showcase 2016 event to the PRIME recruiting dates. The recruiting calendar is always a challenge to maneuver, but with an expected dead period surrounding the July 4th holiday likely to be announced in the coming months it is our belief that the weekends in July will be monopolized by the Club team tournaments and that the individual showcases will be better positioned for college coach and top players attendance in the weekday venues. https://natinvite175.sportngin.com/register/form/051476190“>Click here to apply.

Michael Sowers collected one goal and seven assists to lead Upper Dublin to a 10-9 victory over Spring-Ford in the Katie Samson Foundation Festival Saturday at Radnor High School.

Michael Sowers

Michael Sowers

The win kept the third-ranked Cardinals undefeated at 10-0 while the No. 5 Rams (11-1) suffered their first loss. The two teams remain 1-2 in the LaxPower Rankings that will decide District 1 seeds.

The game was much-anticipated by both squads, who have been dominating their league foes. The Cards have won every game this year by 12 or more goals and Spring-Ford’s closest game was a four-goal win.

“Spring-Ford is a great team,” said Sowers, an All-American and U-19 Team member who is headed to Princeton. “We knew they were going to play hard, so we wanted to come out and execute.

“We circled this game on our calendar. We only get four of these (non-league games).”

The Rams took a 7-6 lead into the final period on a goal by Jake Hvazda (three goals), but Sowers tied it early in the fourth period on an EMO and then set up consecutive goals by Nick Vernacchio and Max Winebrake (three goals).

Spring-Ford pulled within 9-8 on a goal by Ryan Rosenblum, but Sowers fed Evan Scott for a 10-8 lead with 3:30 to play. The Rams made it close with a Hvazda goal in the final 30 seconds, but defenseman Jack Rapine – doubling as a face-off specialist – won the draw and the Cards ran out the clock.

“We knew this would be a District 1 heavyweight battle,” Rams head coach Kevin Donnelly said.

Michael Mullen also had three goals for the Cardinals while Rapine and Nick Vernacchio each added a goal and an assist.

“We finally played a competitive game,” Upper Dublin coach David Sowers said. “Spring-Ford is very well coached. We knew it was going to be a slugfest.”

Matt Dellacroce registered two goals and an assist for the Rams. Kyle Pettine – filling in for starting goalkeeper Chris Morgan – recorded 18 saves in a strong performance.

“Upper Dublin has some good cutters,” said Donnelly, whose team lost face-off specialist Justin Schwenk to a knee injury early in the game. “Our defense let a couple get loose too often.”

Recently it was reported that Michael Sowers has set the all-time state record for career assists with over 350.

“Since he was five years old, Michael has been taught to pass the ball to the open man,” coach Sowers said of his son. “And if the open man drops the ball, to keep passing it again, because eventually that player would make the catch. He understands that it’s not about who scores the goals, but who wins the game.”

Said Michael Sowers: “I always try to play the game the right way.”

Madi O’Brien scored four goals to lead Garnet Valley to a 12-9 victory Saturday afternoon in the 16th annual Katie Samson Foundation Festival at Radnor High School.

Madi O’Brien

“Madi comes up huge in big games,” Jaguars coach Jenny Purvis said. “She has an incredible explosion towards the net.”

Emily Mathewson contributed two goals and four assists for the third-ranked Jaguars (10-1), who scored four of the final six goals to preserve their victory. Riley Delaney and Camryn Faith each added two goals.

“This was a good, competitive game,” Purvis said. “Lacrosse is the most fun game around on two feet, and it’s even more fun when you win.”

Julia Hondros delivered a game-high five goals for No. 2 EA (14-2). Taylor Lucey registered two goals and three assists.

With Garnet Valley clinging to an 8-7 lead midway through the second half, Faith delivered a shorthanded goal. Then O’Brien’s tally extended the team’s lead to 10-7 with 11:38 remaining.

“Our offensive flow was much better than it had been,” said O’Brien, whose three first-half goals allowed the Jaguars to build an 8-3 halftime lead. “We were more patient in our attack, which was our goal.”

According to Purvis, an 8-6 loss to Springfield-Delco on Tuesday forced her team to refocus. “We wanted to get back to the basics,” she said.

Purvis and O’Brien called Episcopal Academy their toughest opponent of the season.

“We played like our hair was on fire,” said O”Brien, a junior attacker said.

For the second time in two days, a Philly team nearly stunned the top-ranked team in North America.

The undefeated and No. 1 Hill Academy of Ontario came to Philly Friday and faced a huge challenge before topping La Salle, 12-10. On Saturday, Salesianum took the Pride (9-0) to overtime before falling, 10-9, on a goal by standout Jeff Teat.

Salesianum led, 4-2, late in the first half before Hill scored three unanswered goals to take a 5-4 second-half lead. In the fourth period Salesianum held a 9-7 lead, but Hill tied it and Teat won it with his fifth tally of the game.

“I’m so proud of our team the way we competed today – both defensively and offensively,” said Sals coach Bobby Healy. “This game will help us down the stretch. We played outstanding in the second half and we’re both physically and mentally tough.”

Mike Drake had two goals and two assists for the Sals, who are 8-2 with losses only to Hill and nationally-ranked Culver Academy. Garrett Cannon had two goals and an assist and Tayler Witherill had two goals while Patrick Drake had a goal and two assists and Luke Bianchino had a goal and an assist. Brett Hobbs scored once and Brady Emmi posted 10 saves in goal.

Mt. Lebanon High School (PA) 2018 midfield Alexis Gibbons has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Lafayette College.

Alexis Gibbons profile:

Alexis Gibbons

Alexis Gibbons

High School: Mt. Lebanon High School, PA

Graduation Year: 2018

Position: Midfield

College Choice: Lafayette College

Club Affiliation: Pittsburgh Premier Lacrosse Club

Lacrosse Honors:
1st year Varsity letter winner – Freshman year
2015 National Women’s Lacrosse Tournament – Western Pa team
2015 Brine National Lacrosse Classic – 2018 Pennsylvania Team

What will you major in/study? Undecided

Why did you choose Lafayette? “I absolutely love the coaches and players, and the campus is beautiful. I felt like the lacrosse program and school was a perfect fit for me. Plus, I would only be 15 minutes away from my sister who will be playing lacrosse at Lehigh next year. This will be a great rivalry!”

HS team’s outlook for 2016 season? “We have a lot of strong seniors who are great leaders and help guide the team. Our best quality is that we play as a team. There really isn’t much individual play because of how well we all work together. We lost in the WPIAL championships last year, so our goal is to get back to Highmark Stadium again.”

Thank You: “I would like to thank my parents for taking the time to travel with me and all their support. I would also like to thank my high school coaches, Brian Kattan and Julie Buschman for their dedication and guidance. Lastly, I would like to thank my club team coaches, Katy Phillips, Katrina Silva, Lori Banky, and Becky Bragan for believing in me.”

Other schools considered: Lehigh University, U. of Cincinnati, George Washington, UNH

Longstreth Women’s Sports, the official sponsor for Phillylacrosse.com girls’ recruits, congratulates Alexis Gibbons. Longstreth specializes in equipment, uniforms and apparel for women’s sports.
